Can NOT COPE with being human paci!

I'm x-posting this in BFing and I'm calling the lactation consultant today also...

Conrad has gone from being the model nurseling, eating every 3-4 hours at night, to a constant nipple fiend who desperately needs to comfort suck. In the last 24 hours, I have not had more than 90 minutes between nursing sessions, and more often it is 45 minutes. It was a LONG NIGHT. This morning, in desperation, I gave him a pacifier. He's only ten days old and we have already worked through some challenges with his latch, and I hate to mess with that by giving him something else to suck on. At the same time, I'm so tired and desperate for him to go to sleep and leave me alone for an hour that I'm not being as vigilant about his latch as I should be, and my nipples are sore from the constant attention anyway.

Any thoughts on nipple substitutes, and/or ideas of how to get more rest for me? Help!

ahhh I feel your pain.. Dean is same.. every 45 mins to 1 hr round the clock.. I have TRIED to give him a paci .. NO WAY, he freaks,, I wish he would take one.. I have no issues giving them.. both my other boys took them and were champ nursers also... hopefully this will pass soon....

Buy some pacifiers, different types, and go with it till he finds one that works for him.

We have to get the latex Nuk. Thomas will not take the silicone Nuk. Go figure.

If he needs a paci I see no issue with giving him one. Being AP is about meeting the needs of your baby, and if he'll take the paci and give his mama a break, go for it!

great idea to rey many types.. thanks PP, don't know why I did not think of that???:::

Definitely, it was much easier for me with #1 who took a pacifier than with #2 who refused every type I tried! I'm hoping this babe will like one! I found no issues with nipple confusion or anything like that, I like a pacifier!

It's pregnancy and nursing -- it sucks our brain cells.

I liked the MAM brand for dd and the NUK for ds. But I didn't know she preferred the MAM until we tried the NUK and she wouldn't touch it. Also, ds (asperger's syndrome) had the NUK and you know how obsessive ASD kids get! (I say that because I noticed your sig! ) We couldn't have him stealing pacis from dd.

I totally don't want to scare you but Mairaed was doing the same thing- up all night long wanting to nurse CONSTANTLY- and it turns out she was not sucking right. As I mentioned in the other thread, she sucks her tongue and never does that slow suck-pause-suck-pause. It is sucksucksuck with her and she only swallows like every 4-6 sucks. Turns out she is not getting enough milk. I hope it is just that he loves his mama but I did want to pass along my experience...

In comparison, Libby does the sucksucksuck swallow thing and uses me as a paci as well and is gaining very well and getting enough milk. I just have to take care with the latch as make sure to fix it if it hurts at all or else this would be so much worse.

Ok, the lactation consultant gave her blessing to a paci, as long as his latch doesn't get sloppy with me and he is still putting on weight. I've got a variety of pacis on order from Drugstore.com, to see if I can find a better option than the Avent we are using now. Now if only I could keep the silly thing in his mouth!

Thanks for the feedback and support, mamas!

DS2 has five (count 'em five!!) pacis until he was about 5 ... after he was about 2 1/2 we only let him have them in bed but still!!! he also had a "chewey tube" from his speech therapist which he was pretty obsessive about for a few yrs... I am so glad to be past that with him and PRAYING we do not get a repeat with this LO..... time will tell....

We hold Thomas' there till he seems to have a good grasp of it. I also put a flat-fold diaper (I use them as burp cloths) under his chin and he grabs the cloth and pulls his hands near his face, shoving the cloth to the paci which shoves the paci in even better, thereby minimizing the chance of it popping out!

Max would collect them and when we were finally weaning them both form the pacifier (about 3 yrs old, Rachel was 18 mos) he would come out of a room w/ another one! No clue where he was finding them.

We managed to very slowly go from pacifier all day to pacifier at night, then sippy cup at night. Now, at 7, he still gets a cup of water at night, every night. I can deal with that.

We know that Conrad is gaining weight really quickly (8 oz in 5 days) and a large portion of the time I can see him swallowing milk, and he's pooping and peeing like crazy. So we are pretty sure that it's comfort sucking.

How did the LC's figure out that she was just sucking on her own tongue? Did her latch look normal, etc?

Just to chime in with a little different point of view, trying not to offend .
If he is 10 days , he might hit his 2 week growth spurt right now and those are hard. With ds I was in tears for a couple of days and then it got better again and he spaced out again. At 6 weeks the same. DD had her growth spurt at around 3 weeks and now at four weeks she is tapering out again. If you wanna use a paci, that is fine, too, but maybe he is just growing. Just another point of view...

I gave my 10 day old daughter a paci after she spent several nights attached to me using me as a paci. My nipples couldn't take it, and the lactation consultant I am working with suggested it. She's much happier now and it's good she can comfort suck it for things like heel sticks and doctors appts.

the paci's i used w/ megh were more bulb shaped which to me were more like a nipple...and the base part was round...more like...an areola. i didn't feel the avent or nuks that have that other shape were anything like what the claim (to be like a mothers nipple). the ones we used were gerber...and were very cheap. i kept them on paci clips by NUK. it definitely helped us...

We've been giving him a paci during the day, after feedings, and the feedings have spread out again at night, for the most part. He's kind of gassy and I think we sloughed off the mylicon for a day and that was making him a little crotchety and wanting to suck more... in any case, this crisis has passed and now we are moving on to thrush. Whee! :
