I recently talked with a friend of mine who gave birth to her first two children (daughters) naturally. Her second came more quickly and easily than her first, and when she became pregnant a third time she expected the same. However, her next child was a boy and her labor was much more difficult, and then with her fourth child (also a boy) she had an even harder time. both boys had heavy meconium and she had difficulty dilating.

during pp of her 4th she discovered that both her boys had Icthyosis and has since found a connection between this skin disorder and difficult labors:

her explanation, and she has done much more reading than i have, is that there is some connection between the missing enzyme and dilation.

her midwives had never heard of this, understandably as the skin disorder is very rare. i think it is absolutely fascinating. she says her father and uncle both have it, and so she is a carrier. her daughters may also be carriers.

have any of you ever come across this in your reading or in experience?
