Convinced an old woman...

My Grandma! I have to share this somewhere..... my sister is 5 months pregnant with a boy and right out of the blue today my grandma asked if she's going to circ him. She knows I'm against it and how I regret it, etc etc. To make a long story short, the topic had come up when she was pregnant with her daughter and at the time my sister was undecided. Anyway, we were dreading the topic because my grandma thinks it should be done. She thinks the intact penis looks awful and intact boys will have painful erections when older. : ANYWAY... she asked her and my sister said no and there was a pause for about a min. Then she says "well he's not going to forgive you when he's older" : So my sister says "he wouldn't forgive me I did have him circ'ed" So right there it snowballed. She said "it's more painful when they're adults to have it done" etc etc etc...typical stuff we've all heard before. So we went on (well mostly me, my sister's not good at giving facts just yet, lol) about why circ'ing started, why parents do it, etc etc etc. My Grandma is very negative about a lot of things and set in her ways but she did listen but it seemed she was letting it roll off her shoulder. She ended the convo with "well if I had a boy today, I'd still circ" She had 4 boys (one died at 2 years old). Soooooooooooo..... a little while later, I secretly went on her computer and looked up a short video on youtube of a circ. I called her in the room and told her I wanted to show her something. She sat down and I pressed play, and left the room (I refuse to ever watch what I put my son through). As I shut her door (so the kids wouldn't go in there), I turned and she had her hands over her mouth while watching it! I told my sister. The video ended and she was SHOCKED!! She had no idea! So we totally convinced her and I showed her the circumstraint that they do it on and she's like "omg, it's like a torture table!" She was a total different person after that. She was like "before, I'm sitting there saying boys should be done and the foreskin looks awful and had no idea what a circ was!" She was so sad to hear that baby cry! She said she just imagined her boys having it done and couldn't believe she did it! So thank God that's over..... I'm so glad they have videos otherwise she probably would've given my sister (and hopefully me eventually) a hard time for leaving our sons intact. I remember her wispering to me in the hospital after having Elena "good thing you don't have to deal with the whole vasoline things this time" And I'm like "I wasn't going to circ!" And she said to Elena "oh good thing you're a girl! : So..... converting an old stubborn woman is possible!! Sorry this is long....

Oh and another thing... this morning my sister and I went to a LLL meeting and a mom changed her sons diaper (he's a month younger then my little one) and my sister, the nosy intactivst that she is, looked and he's intact! Very surprised, lol... ok, I'll shut up now, lol.

I am glad you were able to show your grandma. She obviously had it in her head that circ was different than it was like many people still do. They hear circ and assume it is a simple little snip or a tiny little cut.

Good for you!
I always say, do NOT give up on the older generation! (Being a member of it myself.....) : We don't live in a vacuum; we can influence our peers, co-workers, and children.

Good for you - That is awsome. What a clever way to change her mind. No doubt she will pass on her new found knowlege to her friends, and who knows how many people will get an "education". Every convert helps the cause.

Oops...sorry, I didn't mean to offend. It's just my Grandma is a very stubborn woman, very set in her ways and taking care of the elderly before becoming a SAHM, I've dealt with many and so many older people are stubborn. So I never thought I'd get through to her. Anyway, hopefully you didn't think I mean all older people are like that.

No criticism of you was intended at all. On the contrary, I was trying to PRAISE you!
Don't worry; I was NOT offended!

Yay for your grandma! That's wonderful that she changed her mind after all these years! To think she was advocating for something she didn't even fully understand... it's amazing what a little youtube video can do! Cold hard reality on videotape.

Every time my MIL visits (very pro-circ) I "accidentally" leave out some anti-circ literature. A couple of times, it has been moved, so I know she at least looked at it, even if she does think it's a bit of quackery.

I never give up!

Just read this and I know it's an old post but I just wanted to say how AWESOME that is!! My grandma is the EXACT same way, I also showed her a video and she insisted that is was fake.... Thankfully, some wonderful women she is friends with is anti-circ and told her that it is not necessary and told her everything I have been telling her, i guess she just had to hear it from someone else of her own age to know that things have changed!!!!!!!

what a great idea! I think I may try showing some friends of mine who are pro-circ a video. I'm sure that is far more powerful than anything I could ever say.
