Within minutes after I ingest various forms of sugar I start burping and get a sick tummy. It also makes me fussy/irritable. DD is EBF. Depending on the form/source of the sugar I have ingested, DD reacts within minutes to 24 hours. Worst case scenario (so far) I drank about 4 ounces of organic Silk chocolate soymilk- DD was screaming and vomiting within an hour. Normal scenario is she gets fussy/irritable then gets a nasty hot rash in the front diaper area which creeps up her belly and makes her itch. It goes away about 24 hours after onset. On the POFAK board everyone tells me you can't be allergic to sugar. But we react to sugar, organic sugar, organic turbinado, organic evaporated cane juice, and sometimes to organic dehydrated cane juice. And even a little bit of honey makes me burp, but doesn't seem to give other symptoms. So what's going on here? Any ideas? Wheat and sugar are both grasses, right? So could we be cross-reacting? She can't tolerate the tiniest bit of wheat in my diet. TIA. WWYD, other than try to avoid sugar?

Could it be candida? My naturopath's theory is that a candida overload in the intestines causes irritation/inflammation and allergies. She is treating my 14 mo. son with a candida diet and acidophillus instead of allergy testing. Sugar feeds the candida and can cause the symptoms you are talking about.

I have been diagnosed with a fructose intolerance, which means my body can't matabolise fructants well, causing bloating, gas and other symptoms. Fructose is in alot of things, alot of sugars (honey, maple syrup, agave syrup....)and alot of other foods aswell (variety of fruits and vegetables, and wheat). Even foods sweetened with fruit juice (especially apple and pear) are bothersome.

WHat is the POFAK?

The candida is a good theory to.

I was thinking candida, too.

Funnily enough, I was just cruising POFAK last night. I'm thinking we're joining after the holidays when we have an extra $25 laying around.

Wow, me too. I react to sugar sometimes. I have avoided it for a long time and if I use it I do so very sparingly. However, I ate loads of sugar the other night and got really sick. I thought it was b/c it may have been contaminated with gluten but this may be the problem as well. How do you find out if you have fructose intolerance?

I wonder if it's the sugar itself or if you're reacting to something else that's in the high-sugar foods. Sugar tends to be in a lot of unhealthy foods with mystery ingredients. Or things that might be cross-contaminated with wheat or gluten.

Mystery! I have a friend who also reacts to sugar--she goes more the headache, sniffly nose route, though.

I was diagnosed with a hydrogen breath test, through a GI specialist. I have know this for a few years but have made no changes to my diet yet.....it all seems very ovewhelming, I may be reacting to high fructose fruits and vegetables, wheat...and of course sugar.

I am hoping to get motivated to make major changes to my diet and heal my gut from reading through these threads.

oh, and it should be noted, dietary fructose intolerance and hereditary fructose intolerance are not exactly the same thing....hereditary fructose intolerance is a rare genetic illness and the consequences of eating fructose are much more severe!

Thanks for the ideas. We probably do have a bacteria imbalance but we're working on it. I'm sure its the sugar we're reacting to, because the symptoms occur if I put a small amount in my mouth with no other ingredients. And I don't believe its fructose intolerance, because the only fruit I've ever reacted to was raw pineapple as a child (contact/oral rxn from the acid).
