Am I in labor?

I have had a few times in the past couple weeks that I thought i was in labor, but the contractions stopped. Today I have been having contractions a bit stronger than the ones I had before, but also some bloody mucus when I wiped after going to the bathroom. Does the blood mean I am in labor, or can that happen before, too. I just don't want to call my midwife for her to come and find I am not really in labor.

There's really no great rush to get the midwife there unless she has an extremely long (hours) drive. When you're in active labor you will almost certainly know it.
