Easiest Omelet ever!

OK, a friend showed me this and I've been so excited about it since! But, every one I've shared it with always said that they already knew about it. So, I thought I would share it, so others like me aren't left in the dark.

You whisk your eggs and place in a gallon zip-lock freezer bag. Then add your extras (bacon, mushrooms, olives, onions....what ever you want!) Add your cheese, seal the bag and place the bag in boiling water and cook till done.

When it's done, open and slide it onto your plate! Ta-da!

My kids love it and it's AWESOME for camping.

I may be a little dorky, but I still think it's cool

is getting a plastic bag that hot safe? seems like there might be some kind of chemicals released when the plastic got hot. I don't microwave in plastic because of the risk of chemicals being released... I don't think I'd be ok with boiling it either. seems like a fun trick for camping though

This is one of those fun things to do very rarely. Ziploc specifically recommends against using their product in this way for two reasons:

1- The plastic is not designed to be boiled, and could be unsafe when heated to such temperatures.
2- There is no way to guarantee that the egg is cooked all the way through to a consistent temperature, which could lead to salmonella poisoning.

That said, though, my family and I have enjoyed a few Ziploc omelets. Now that we have become much more conscious of the safety of heating plastic in contact with foods, we do not eat them any more. It was fun though.

I wonder if you could do it like that in a foil bag of some sort????

Hmmm. I never thought of the chemicals. :

I bet a doubled folded foil bag would work. I'll have to experiment!

I have a microwave omlet maker, that is pretty much the same kind of easy. You cook the eggs for 2 minutes then add stuff to the middle cook 2 more minutes and then foldover and serve. Super Easy and clean up is so much more simpler.

I'm not really buying the clean up is simpler thing cause when I make an omlet, I use one pan, cook the egg part way, put fillings in, and slide out/fold over onto a plate then wipe the pan out with a paper towel and I'm done.

I keep hearing about this idea. Good to know about the toxic element. Won't be trying that one!

I like the taste of cooking my eggs in butter or olive oil. I'm a firm beleiver that natural fats are good for you, so I don't want to hear that the plastic bag way is healthier because it's lower in fat.

One of my friends made these at our holiday brunch last year. It weirded me out and I hadn't even thought of the chemical aspect. I prefer the traditional old omelet cooked in a pan.
