still trying to figure this out 2 yrs later...

Thread Starter
Well, 2 yrs ago I finally got ahold of a LC who didn't dismiss my concerns about Luke have food issues. We did elimination diets and even SCD. I came away confirming my suspiciousness about milk. However, I have had lingering worries about soy and wheat. I have taken them off of them for awhile, back on and off. Thinking I was crazy, sure I was right, I am sure you know the feeling. Currently he is off of milk, as am I due to the baby having issues as well.

I usually don't eat grains as I feel that I don't deal with them well. However, that is only with some of them. I feel all bloated (also evidenced by a 2-3 lb weight gain) when eating breads. Although, whole grain breads seem to be worse for this than any processed or refined bread. However, noodles and such don't seem to affect me as much, although I find them really, really addictive. (I guess it goes without saying that any bread or grains we eat are dairy free)

As a result Luke doesn't usually eat this things as well. However, I have noticed again that when he eats bread he gets diarrhea very quickly. So, now I am thinking that perhaps I was right about the wheat all along.

Now, I am wondering if I should go ahead and finally do some kind of testing. I was looking into perhaps doing the Enterolab testing. I am wondering what tests I need though. I have been off and on suspicious about Celiacs/gluten issues. I worry about the fact that he is so small. I am really curious about the fact that after he stopped nursing (when I got pregnant) he suddenly gained 3 lbs, but hasn't gained much since then (a year ago). I really am curious about his nightmares and restless sleep, potty accidents(although previously trained) and behavior issues all of which seem to be related to food. From previous reading I understood it that it seemed he had an intolerance and not an allergy, which is a big reason we never pursued allergy testing, that and the fact that it doesn't seem to be terribly accurate with little ones.

Does anyone have any input here. Does it just seem I am crazy? Part of me thinks I would just like to know for sure and it seems their tests are highly recommended around here. Does anyone have advice on which to do, I was thinking of doing the whole gluten/celiacs panel as on the faq's it stated that they threw in the milk testing for free. As it is right now I cannot afford to do this until taxes and even then I won't have money to just be throwing around so I am trying to figure out what I really need to do, trying to be thorough and also frugal as possible.

If you have made it all this way thanks so much.

Well we finally had to get an IgE blood test done to satisfy DH (he fought me on the legitamacy of Enterolab) so blood tests might be a good place to start for you. It is mainstream, can be ordered by your regular Ped and should be covered by ins. All the top 8 plus any other foods which can be suspect. Immunocap is most sensitive.

Get the testing if you can afford it.

Check out this website about oxalates:
http://lowoxalate.info/

I am oxalate sensitive and I can eat refined flour products but whole grain anything is a problem. Poke around the website, you will get a feel for the oxalate issue if it is a problem for you.

PM me if you want more specific info.
