Quick!!! Turnip Ideas Please!!!

I bought some turnips at the farmer's market where we are staying. They looked so good but I have no idea how to cook them. I was just planning on steaming the greens and serving with butter but I don't know how to cook the root part and I don't have my copy of NT here.

Ideas please!!!! TIA!!!

my grandma used to make them like mashed potatoes. She would peel and dice them up. then boil them until tender. Add cream and butter and mash them up

My son really loves LF Turnips. He asks for them almost every night. If you have time to make those, that's what I'd do. Other than that, we like them sauteed with lots of butter and herbs.

Slice them and sautee in butter, add some eggs. Probably the best type of omelette that i've ever had because turnips are so sweet and they caramelize easily.

What are LF turnips?

My kids like the pickled turnip recipe in NT. Sliced turnips, beets, onions and brine I think.

They are delicious just cut into thin sticks and sauteed in butter. Like quietserena said..they carmelize nicely and are sweet while still having a peppery bite.

I just looked turnips up in Simply in Season:

It says (paraphrsed):

You don't need to peel baby turnips, but you do need to peel turnips with tougher skins.

You can blanche them in boiling water for 4-5 minutes to get rid of a strong or bitter flavor.

You can boil them (15-20 minutes whole turnips) or roast them in the oven or microwave them for 4 minutes.

You can eat turnip greens as well, boiled or steamed.

You can bake them with other sweet vegetables like carrots or parsnips

You can boil them and then puree them with a potato.

Not your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook has a recipe for Beef in Guinness with Turnips. (if you get on amazon and search for "guinness" you can probably find it.
