green christmas decorating

Does anyone have any suggestions for decorating the house and yard with items that are not made in china and are green? I would love some solar-powered decorations or some ideas of ways to decorate that don't involve plastic. I don't want to buy red colored plastic wrap or foam candy canes or MIC lights that will make our energy bill rise to the sky.

Any ideas or links?

macaroni angels

You could make your own wreaths from tree trimmings and such. Use candles around the house instead of lights. String cranberries and popcorn.

I need some lower cost energy efficent tree lights. I like a LOT of lights on my tree....it's the only light we need in the LR the whole time our tree is up.

I'm looking for ones that are long lasting and not super high investment...

Thanks!

dried fruits?

I have seen candy canes made with PVC pipe (I know, I know, but it was from the salvage store!) - one straight lenght and an elbow. Then paint the red stripe or wrap with red ribbon, and drive into the ground along a sidewalk or use to decorate the porch.

Paper snowflakes and paper chains hung in the windows can be made of scrap paper and keep the kids busy making them. Ooo, window painting too.

We don't use candles because they're too attractive to the toddler, but I agree they are a lovely decoration. Soy candles burn cooler and longer, and I can't stop myself from mentioning that candle accidents are a huge cause of seasonal house fires this time of year so really be vigilant about them (/end lecture - sorry!).

I agree w/a PP that evergreens are really pretty and easy too - if you have the right porch rail or outside windowsill, you can even swag them elaborately right across the front of the house.

The only LED lights I have seen are pretty pricey, so I'm not sure what to do about lights.

We have LED lights for the outside of our home, and we put up pine roping with them. I would love to make some of those grapevine reindeer (you know, the natural colored, twiggy kind people have in their yards), but I'm not sure I have the time and energy for all that, and I'm sure the premade ones are MIC.
We make paper window stars like these: http://www.novanatural.com/s.nl/it.A...&category=4828

We are going to decorate an outside tree for the wildlife this year. Pinecones smeared with peanut butter and rolled in birdseed and tied with red yarn, popcorn and cranberry strings, that kind of thing.
One of the things I am really big on this year is getting a smaller tree for inside. We usually buy a $100+ Fraser Fir that takes up the entire room where we set it up. We have a wee house, so we are getting a smaller tree. Part of it for me is also that I just want a simpler Christmas.

crochet a 'popcorn' string...

That way you use yarn laying around the house and have no worries about throwing the food/string away at the end of the holidays. You can always change colors of yarn to make it look neater.

---"reindeer" and "angels" made from your little one's hand prints (brown for antlers, white for wings...construction paper or popsicle sticks for bodies)
---popcorn and cranberry garland (stale popcorn is easier to string
---evergreen branches tied with ribbon or yarn (often free or cheap at tree shops)
---white, green, red, gold, or silver candles grouped in bowls or on platters
---slice lemons and other citrus fruits into rounds and let them dry (looks great on the tree or hanging in a window where the sun can shine through, like stained glass)
---ice shapes if you have cold weather...pour water into molds and freeze. Add a rope loop before freezing and you can hang your ice stars. Or place a small cup in the water to hold a candle later so you have an ice luminario.
---regular luminarias http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminaria (reuse the bags later)
---paper snowflakes cut from unk mail/holiday catalogs
---a bowl of pomegranates and smooth black stones or a bowl of pinecones
---walnuts or other hard shelled nuts painted gold and hung on the tress (you can use gold foil instead and eat the nuts after the holidays)
---a few cinnamon sticks tied with ribbon (again, can be untied and used after the holidays are over)
---papermache ornaments made from junk mail/catalogs

I painted my leftover pumpkins from Halloween. (Some of the small ones didn't rot.) I painted them white and sprinkled them with gold glitter and am using them on the mantle with small votive candles, greenery and seashells.

I also found some really beautiful small pine cones in a neighbors yard and have put them in a clear cylinder vase. I stuck some dead branches in the vase and hung some old white ornaments that I had from several years ago. Its amazingly pretty.

Pine cones always make great fill in decorations and look beautiful paired with greenery from your yard or off the bottom of the tree. Oranges studded with cloves are great too and we love pommagranets. They are plentiful this time of year and can be eaten when you're done using them for decor. They also dry very well and will keep for years that way.

Other things we use in an effort to be green (and frugal) are old deer antlers, small shrubs or trees that can be planted later put in old galvanized buckets and tied with ribbon, old christmas cards from previous years that can be cut out and made into ornaments or strung on pretty ribbons and hung on door frames, inexpensive bunches of white or red flowers from the grocery store, sea shells, and potpourri made from a cut up orange and lemon simmered in a pot of water with clove and cinnamon. This smells tons better than any candle.

We put BELLS on the dog.:

That was more entertainment than decoration, though.

I promise he liked it; he just had to show the bells who was boss. Unfortunately, every time he 'won' he would shake them, and their tinkling seemed to mock his pride. It was a vicious cycle.

I like bells everywhere, though.

Wow, these are great ideas! So far, our only "green" decoration that we've done is to find a really big branch--about 4 or 5 feet--with lots of little branches on it. We paint that white and put it in a metal bucket with white stones to hold it in place. Then we hang garlands, lights, and ornaments on it and that's our tree!

We have a lot of old decorations from previous years that we still use, but they are *not* green. I'm sure they're coated in nasty chemicals, and I'm fairly certain they're all MIC.

I really like the pine cone vase idea...I might try that for our holiday party next weekend!

oooh-I forgot about clove-studded oranges. We used to make them all the time as kids and they smell soooo yummy.
Whole cloves are quite pricey if I remember.......

We switched all our lights to either LED or solar. I bought two sets of Solar lights off of ebay I can't wait until they arrive. We also bought a live tree this year to help Local farmers and oxygen. I'm taking some notes from everyone here

Thanks!
