They are seductively cheap.

And always on ebay when you search doppler. They are about $175.

Yes, I bought a Sonotrax off ebay. Yes, cheap--but mine works just fine. Digital display of FHT isn't reliable, but other than that it's fine. I've been using mine for 18mos now with no issues.

Wow, that's great to know! Thanks!

I have one too, I bought mine for $119. It works fine, I only use it for waterbirths (I have a Huntleigh or a Pinard horn for prenatals). The sound quality is less than Huntleigh, but I don't have a problem with hearing FHTs under water.

I posted before about buying the Sonotrax (w/the green wand, it's waterproof) but this weekend after using my doppler again and having heard FHT much more often with Huntleighs and Nicolets I decided to exchange my doppler for a Huntleigh.

I have trouble hearing at times and just couldn't seem to get the volume to go high enough... I've seen posts here where the Huntleigh are said to have better sound quality so that's what I'm shooting for.

So, do you mean it is hard to hear the 10-weekers, or hard to hear period? Is there a lot of "noise" w/ the sonotrax?

Do you really have to spend over $400 for a good one? I will get a fetoscope, obviously, but I'm not so great w/ them when mamas have a little extra "padding."

I hadn't even tried it on anyone less than 28 weeks but I just thought it was kinda hard to hear period... and if you move too quickly you get that screechy sound a lot more frequently than with the Elite. Cringe. But honestly, I'm no expert and I do have a bit of a hearing problem with certain sounds so maybe it's just me but the volume doesn't seem as loud as the other two brands I've heard. :

I have a Huntleigh D920 on the way... 2mhz waterproof probe, it costs $212.50ppd from Stork Radio on eBay. I bought the Sonotrax from them recently and they are letting me exchange dopplers and pay the difference. I found an old thread were pamamidwife said she likes Huntleigh for the sound quality and my midwife has that brand now and it sounded pretty good to me. The mw I assist uses the Nicolet Elite and I like it pretty well but we tend to end up with KY all over the place because the probe is shorter and wider and being sticky with KY is kinda annoying to me.

So... hopefully I will be totally happy with the Huntleigh D920. It doesn't have the FHT display but getting an FD+1 with the display means spending $300 more and I think for that much money I can just use the second-hand on my watch. As far as I can tell, that's the only difference between the two.

Well I've been trained to never look at the digital display anyway! I'm going to look into the Stork Radio people. Does the Huntleigh you mention have the waterproof probe?

Yes, it does. It's a fixed probe though, I think you have to get the Dopplex II (~$575) to be able to interchange probes.

Can you tell I spent too much time online researching?

I've got one. I've just used it for prenatals and it's been fine. I haven't had a chance to use it during a waterbirth. My partner has a Huntleigh with the waterproof probe, but everytime she uses it during a waterbirth it sounds really crappy and sometimes doesn't even work in the days following. I think she's going to try a new probe and see if that helps.
