% Discounts

I see posts pretty frequently from mamas who say there are double discounts on something, so they add the percents. For example, something is 40% off and another 20% off. That doesn't mean it's now 60% off. It means it's 40% off, and then 20% off of the 60 remaining percent.

If you added the discounts, then 40% off + 20% off would equal 60% off. This is wrong.

Really, it's 40% off, and then 20% off of 60%, which equals 48%. So the discount would be 52%.

It doesn't sound like much, but it's paying $4.00 for something versus paying $4.80 for it. Or if the percents are higher, it's even more of a difference.

I don't think I explained this very well, but it's been something that drives me crazy.

Great post, that is a pet peeve of mine too. I once vented about a store not honoring a 50% off coupon I had b/c the merchandise was already 50% off and the coupon was an error. Someone posted and said that the store "shouldn't have to give me things for free". :
