6-month-old quasi strike

My 6-month-old suddenly only nurses well in the morning, when my breasts are really full. In the afternoon/evening, she gets excited when I lift my shirt, latches on eagerly, sucks for a few seconds, then screams. Switching her back and forth from right to left side keeps her interested for a few minutes but no longer than that.

This has been going on for a week now, almost.

I WOH 3 days/week, and she takes bottles great -- she resisted them until about a month or two ago... now she loves them too much, I guess.
We only use slow-flow nipples, but I'm sure it still comes out faster than from the breast late in the day.

I think my supply has dropped slightly, too, but it's not like there's NO milk in there when she gets fussy. If I squeeze, some sprays out.
I've started taking fenugreek (just yesterday, so no noticeable effect yet), and for the past 5 days I've been off of work with her. We've been nursing nearly every single hour, plus I've been pumping 4-6 times a day for 20 minutes whenever I can fit it in. I've been getting 4 oz. from the first-thing-in-the-morning pump, after she's nursed (until last week it had been more like 6-7 oz.), and 1-2 oz. at the other sessions, for a total of about 10 oz. a day.

The past 3 nights I've broken down and given her 3 oz. of EBM from the bottle b/c I was so worried about her going to bed hungry. (She hasn't nursed overnight in nearly a month, and she screams bloody murder if I try to pick her up out of her crib at night.) She has sucked down those through the slow-flow nipple in 2 minutes like she was starving, but when I offer her the breast afterwards in case she wants more, she refuses.

She's been sleeping okay (same as usual, anyway), and has been cheerful except during the actual late-in-the-day nursing sessions. Normal peeing and pooping. She doesn't take any solids, really. We let her have some mushy foods to play with, but she mostly licks, squishes, and throws it... she's probably ingested 11 molecules of sweet potato and banana total in her lifetime.

So... should I stop giving her bottles completely except while I'm at work? Will she eventually nurse well again if she gets hungry enough?

I would quit the bottles when you are at home all together, Only use them when you are not around. Also, the switching is kind of a good thing, it's a good way to boost your supply, but it is also super annoying(I have a switcher). I would try to nurse more frequently in the evening, before your baby gets to hungry, and while your nursing, if babe starts to get frustrated you can try breast compressions(you can do a search on http://www.kellymom.com to get directions)

Also, make sure you are nursing before offering solids. Until baby turns one, solids are jsut for fun and experimenting, breastmilk should be their primary food source. It also sounds like your babe isn't quite ready for them. I tried with ds at 6 mo, and he just played. Finally I backed off until he showed me he was ready, and boy at 9mo, was he ready.

Http:://www.kellymom.com has some great info about starting solids.

Good luck mama!

Thanks! Actually we're all good now. Naturally after I finally posted she decided to start nursing with no problem again. I did stop the bottles, and I think the Fenugreek helped bump up my supply, as did the near-constant nursing and pumping.

Oh yeah... not worried at all about the solids (or lack thereof)... that was just to say that it wasn't the solids causing the nursing strike by any means!

Awesome news! Your supply is most likely up with the frequent nursing. Nothing boosts a supply like frequent nursing. Good job mama!
