OMG our grocery bill was insane this Nov!

Sorry, I know this appears to be the topic right now but I guess I just want my own thread too I looked at our bank account online and we barely spent anything on extras and we're flat broke until DH gets paid at the end of the month. Between WalMart and the grocery store we spent almost $600 in Nov!!! When I was paying cash this summer we were spending more like $300. I know food prices keep going up but this is getting out of control. I bought a new flat iron for my hair for $35 and two exercise balls (DS popped the first) at $10/each but other than that I think most everything was food. Is this crazy or what? I think for Dec I'm just going to withdraw $300 cash, hide my ATM card and just use that cash only for groceries (including toilet paper, detergent, etc.). I drive very little so I only need to gas up 1-2x/mo. If anyone else has any tips you haven't shared on other threads please post them here so I can get organized and save $$$

What I do is make up a menu every week for the following week, check my pantry for what we alreay have on hand and then buy the things I need to finish out the menu. I only go to the store once a week and stay out of places like Walmart and Target unless I have something specific to buy.

I agree that now would be the perfect time to do a pantry challenge. Go to the store for fresh items only and you'd be amazed at the savings. Sometimes it makes for interesting meals, but I bet you'd notice a difference.
