What's your nighttime diaper routine?

Do you change them in the middle of the night or when they get up to feed? I remember with ds that we would change him part way through feeding because he wasn't staying awake enough to finish and he had weight gain issues. Plus he would never nurse lying down so I was up anyway so I'd change him.

But is there a reason to otherwise if they aren't fussy about it? Will we have major diaper rash issues?

i believe each baby is different. not sure about boys yet...will learn that real soon! i don't believe i changed megh much during the night...i can't remember. wow, i can't remember a LOT about all that now that i really think about it. my memory is shot re. certain things... but mostly, i didn't change her at night unless i noticed her diaper felt real full/heavy/wet. she also didn't have many rashes...so i didn't worry about it.

We change him every time he gets up in the night....or approximately every 2-4 hours as needed in between boobs during feeding. He's pretty wet usually, though sometimes not by much and I go ahead and change him if he's wet at all.

I am afraid he will get too sore if I don't.

I change Libby every feeding as she tends to go then actually. lol. It often wakes her up for the other boob. I changer her when ever she needs it and two weeks old still no sign of rash thankfully.

If you're going to wait, I would use a diaper like Fuzzi Buns that wicks moisture away and use lots of absorbant inserts. I was told the Hemparoo inserts....

We change her every feeding, or more, since she tends to go through a few diapers while eating. I don't alway keep covers on her, so I usually know as soon as she pees--and poops are loud enough to wake us up!

At first, I was changing her right after feeding so it would wake her for the next side. She seemed to sleep longer if I fed her on both sides. But now she's sleeping 2-4 hours in between each boob and doesn't really want the other side, so I check her diaper before I nurse her. She's usually wet and I end up changing her 2-3 times per night.

I usually only change him if he poops, which is usually once per night, although I'm thinking of night as being from midnight to seven.

If you start at 7 or so when bedtime begins, he would get changed twice.

We use FB's at night and I only change them if they poop. Working pretty well so far...

Yeah, what she said!

I'm envious of those of you who can get away with no nighttime changes. I think once Piper gets a bit bigger and can fit into smalls, we will probably be able to get away with none or maybe just 1 change per night. I love the fit of our VB newborn AIO's, but they aren't terribly absorbant (none of the nb diapers really are though.) I have 5 small Bumgenious AIO's that I'll probably use mostly for nighttime once she grows into them. But once again, I've birthed a child with no butt. She's got a bit more than my second dd did though (who started in preemie diapers, but was just over 7 lbs.) Piper has a big abdomen, and then a teeny tiny behind, looks kind of funny. But there's no way I could fit any small size diapers on her yet. So glad I put so much time and effort into sewing up so many VB NB's.

Conrad is fairly scrawny-bottomed also.

We change diapers at each feeding at night. We change before the feeding and sometimes end up changing at the end if he pooped midway through... and then I have to top him off with another helping of breast milk to lull him to sleep... sort of a milk-poop-milk cycle.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll be prepared to change him every time since that seems to be what happens/is needed by most! It was a nice fantasy-side-lying nursing and no diaper changes

I've been able to change about twice a night (around 12am and then again at around 5-6am depending on when she wakes to eat for that morning feeding). The feeding between those two I usually just feed her and doze back off with her unless I know she pooped.

I also try to get DH to wake up for at least one of those to do the change since he doesn't have to get up to feed her.

It's been working out just fine so far.

Unfortunately my DD is not happy at all with feeling the least bit wet, and so I end up changing her 3+ times in the middle of the night (12 hour period). I've tried Fuzzibunz, BumGenius and Happy Heiny's but they are either too big and she pees out the leg holes or too small and not absorbent enough.

This is exactly where we are at right now. I don't enjoy having to change her w/ every nursing, but there's no other option until she gets a bit bigger.

My husband is in charge of the diapering since I'm in charge of milk production. Conrad gets extremely grumpy about being wet, which my husband finds ironic given that he spent 9 months floating around in amniotic fluid.

I usually end up changing DS twice a night. The few times that I've put him to bed in the one Happy Hempy pocket that we have, we only have to change him once. I love that thing.

Well, ds has really slowed down on the night-time pooping and your fantasy is more or less my reality if I put him in a sposie to sleep. If I use cloth I'll change him 2-3 times a night. Also, if I know he's pooped I change him, but mostly I wake up around 6 and he's just got a teeny-tiny bit of poo in his diaper.

I did just buy a bunch of small FBs for night-time diapering. I'm really hoping they work out for us b/c I'd like to have in cloth even at night (which is the only time we use sposies). Ds1 wears a sposie at night too since he sleeps longer with one than with cloth.

Bear is a pooping machine and the poor kid would be covered if we didn't change him after a feeding. I swear he is going to live up to his nickname, he is 2.5 weeks old has grown an inch and gained a pound + on his birth weight. In fact he poops so much I'm waiting to use all the wool soakers I knitted until maybe he slows down some.
