Probiotics and Toddler Poos....

Just read over the in the toddler section a lovely littly TMI something about toddler poos and what's...in them...DS has always been a great eater, all TF--his only snack food that isn't prepared are sourdough pretzels--so he's getting the correct preparation of nutrients in all he consumes...But the poster said that if one "sees" all of the foodies coming out, that the babe isn't digesting them properly, and that a probiotic would help. The bell went off and that's my son to a T.....I know the probiotics are pretty costly, and I always thought high quality yogurt/dairy cultures would help in that area more so.....Any thoughts on this, and if I should introduce probiotics from the store, what kind should I be looking for??

TIA---especially since I've had so many questions lately

Well, my DD has always eaten yogurt, fermented veggies, and kefir and she always had big nasty poops that caused her a great deal of trauma. As soon as I started her on probiotics, her poops became more frequent, smaller, and not traumatic for her at all.

However, she's always digested everything and I've rarely seen anything I recognize in her poo. So it's not the same situation, really - all I can say is, I'm a fan of the probiotics. In her case I think she just needed a few more bugs down there - she'd never take in *enough* kefir or fermented veg, and the yogurt bugs aren't very persistent.

How old is your DS? For a 12 month old lots of undigested food is pretty normal, for an almost-2-year-old, probably not. Probiotics really aren't that expensive when you realize that most of them will last 2-3 months or more, so you're only spending $5 or so per month. If they help, they're definitely worth it...just make sure you do a little research first to find one that's likely to be beneficial.

: Anyone have a favorite probiotic for a 15 month old? We just ran out of the Udo's Choice powder which DD had mixed in with water.

I'm curious too...looking into probiotics now. Also wondering if it's ok to add them to smoothies. My girls won't drink them alone or even in juice.

We like BioKult for the whole family. DS is on the spectrum and they are very strong and shelf stable. He takes a lot (6 every day) because of his special needs, but regular kids could take 1-2/day. I try to mix it in with DD applesauce or yogurt (she doesn't swallow pills yet).

probiotics are great. i've been using them for five years or so, and when i had my first baby-7 months ago, i sprinkled some from a capsule into his mouth at only one week old to prevent thrush. you can literally use them anywhere. smoothies, on top of yogurt, on your nipple to breastfeed, or into babies mouth(my baby loves it!) you can't overdose on probiotics, meaning they wont do harm to body in large consumption. i order from "natures sunshine" they are of the highest quality herbs and such. i use the "bifidopholus flora"
