I think the first time I went to see the Nutcracker (at the Kennedy Center no less) was when I was 3. My poor mom picked up the soundtrack and I wanted "Sugah plum faaaaaaaaiiiiiiirrrrry!!!" to be played ALL the time.
I just wanted to echo the sentiment of others about the ability of your kid to sit still, and the idea that a matinee might be the best option.
Also, really keep the venue in mind. Some places you can stand up with your kid in the aisle and walk around. Others, you might feel more pressure to keep your kid sitting and still no matter what. Also, the more comfortable your kid the better. Try to put him clothes he likes that aren't restricting. If he doesn't feel confined by his clothes, he may not feel so confined by his seat thus ensuring a nice comfortable experience. And, one final thing, make sure you have seats where your little guy can see!
