moving trucks?

We are moving in 2 weeks and we cannot find a truck or van to borrow:
We really don't own much but the move is out of state (only 25 miles) and I can't fathom using our only car (tiny VW) to move our things. Any ideas on a cheap rental?
In reality, we will have to borrow money from SIL for a moving truck because funds are stretched as it is right now so we need something as cheap as possible.

Hmmm...prices vary but I'd check things like Uhaul and rent-a-truck but also the day rental pickup trucks some home supply stores have. You might be able to rent a large vehicle from a regular car company as well...we once rented a suburban for a large family weekend event (needed room for lots of car seats ). If you move in the middle of the week you might get a discount?

good luck!

We just moved and had really good luck with budget trucks. They were super layed back, there were no hidden charges and it was really cheap. There is even 10 percent off online and you can pick the location. We had a 15 foot truck for a 60 mile move to a different state for 3 full days for 115 dollars. We actually got to load it twice and moved almost everything.

We have used Uhaul in the past and there are hidden fees (mandatory insurance) and there are lots of stories of their trucks breaking down, etc. They almost always "lose" the reservation, especially for one day rentals. The trucks are yucky, etc.

We stumpled onto budget by spending hours combing the web for the best deals.

Also - home depot has vans and pickups that they rent for 20 bucks per 1 hour/15 mins. I don't know if that would help.

PODS or Pack Rat.

Pack up the "box" and then they move it.

We have moved 6 times in 12 years. Two of those moves were over 1000 miles each and the companys my husband was working for had United Van Lines move us.

However, the other moves we paid for ourselves and did ourselves. We have used Budget and I think our first move (from St. Louis to Wichita) was Uhaul.

To be honest it all depends on what area you are living in. I know this last move (United Van Lines from Southern Cal to Bozeman, MT) was $6500. I think the move from Colorado to Southern Cal was over $8,000. But United came and packed up everything, loaded and unloaded everything and had an additional driver truck come and get my husbands truck and deliver it to Southern Cal.

The moves we have done I think was under $300-$200. But that included appliance/furniture dolly, packing blankets, tie downs etc.

I would contact:

Budget
Uhaul
PODS (we did that for our move from Lakewood, CO to Castle Rock, CO and that worked out great!)

Truck companies will probably have mileage to consider too.

Hope this helps.

My UHaul Move where I made two trips and put about 60 miles total on the odometer cost us less than $120, including the gas we had to buy. If you are only moving 25 miles, it can be a local rental.

McDonalds has good, free boxes that are just the right size for packing.

I have found Uhaul to generally to be more $$$ then the other truck rental places. I have found two local companies where I live at that beat the name brand national companies.

BTW when you make a reservation with UHaul they have up to 3 days to honor your reservation.

Another thumbs up for Budget. We have moved 6 times in the last 7 years, and Budget is cleaner, more user-friendly, and better maintained than U-Haul in our experience. (You can waive the U-Haul "mandatory" insurance, but they try very hard not to let you know that). And liquor store boxes=free, strong, and just the right size for many things

You could also check out Penske. There prices are pretty good since it's winter now.

We've been hitting up Borders for their free boxes! They are perfect size and stack great with each other. I've found that calling ahead is the best way. They have never turned me down when doing so. Just walking in and asking, I've been turned away every time.

We've also had a bad experience with uhaul. When we moved last summer we used budget, they were the cheapest and the trucks were in much better shape than uhauls.

If you don't have much to move, it may be cheaper for you to rent a mini van or a cargo van. We've had good luck with enterprise.
