Nursing 15 mo with cut tongue

My 15 mo fell outside today and apparently bit into his tongue with his two top teeth. There were pools of blood, and finally I was able to tell that it was coming from a deep laceration on his tongue.

I've tried to nurse him since then, and he just howls. Howls. I think he uses his tongue a lot to nurse, and I know that cuts on the tongue are painful, and well...you get the picture.

These days, we have about three or four nursing sessions a day - at night, in the morning before we get up, and one or two other times throughout the day.

Anyone have any suggestions for what I can do? How long it might be till he's not in pain nursing anymore? What to do in the meantime?

He let me look at it again, and I guess I shouldn't call it a deep laceration - just two fairly deep places where his teeth went into his tongue.

Ouch! That sounds painful! Have you considered temporarily giving a painkiller so that he can nurse without so much pain? The breastmilk should help to heal things up faster, I would think.
I hope he feels better soon!
