Story of the World CDs?

I don't know where I should post this, but I thought I'd have the best luck with the homeschoolers!

I am interested in the Story of the World CDs.
We don't homeschool.
My almost 8 year old son (and 8 year old girl we carpool with) love the Jim Weiss CDs - King Arthur, Thomas Jefferson, and Galilleo.

Can anyone tell me if they are similar? What do you love, not love?
And can you see listening to these without the workbooks?

Oh, and got any to sell? My neighbor jsut bought the Ancient times set, so whatever is left!

You absolutely do not need the books if you have the CD's.

In fact, Jim Weiss is the reader on the newer CD's. (I don't know if he's done them all yet)

Enjoy!

My girls are enjoying the CDs this year. They are 9.5, 11, and 12. They read along in the book while they listen because it helps them concentrate more.

My only complaint is that there are a few technical problems, there are chapters where he skips every other line on a page, or there will be paragraphs that he repeats twice in a row.

Overall we love them and I will buy them for the next book and will probably buy the first two books on CD for my son when he's old enough to school.

Watching replies because I'm thinking of getting the CDs. We drive a lot and love audio books. I'm using History Odyssey so this would actually allow me to get the SOTW chapters "read" while using driving time.

We have vol 1, and my 7yo ds likes it. However, I don't think it is as engaging as the story collections that Weiss has recorded. There's a lot of "then the Assyrians conquered the Babylonians and ruled for a while. Then later the Babylonians came back and smashed up the library and built a garden." History just isn't as coherent as a centurys-old folk or fairy tale, kwim? But they are good - just don't want you to be disappointed if you've heard the other, better collections.

We have volume 1 and enjoy it enough that I plan to purchase volume 2 even if I do not homeschool DS next year.

I haven't had any problems with skipping or repeating lines.

OB, that was what I was wondering...if they were as good from an engaging sort of way like his other CDs. So this is a step up in detail (I would think from 7 CDs!!), but still has some of the characteristic Jim in there? Different voices talking to each other?

No - they are not dramatic readings at all, because the material is not dramatic. He's reading a book that was written by Susan Wise Bauer, and while I like her writing, reading it is nothing like the "storytelling" that he does in other collections. The series is so long because he's reading all 4 volumes that SWB wrote, which cover all of recorded human history. So not very detailed at all, actually! But all that said, we do like it, and ds has willingly listened to it. Except he makes fun of the way JW reads the chapter headings. "CHAPter ONE!" "CHAPter TWO!" :
