sandwich baggie alternative-- Safe??

Sorry, I wasn't sure where to post this, but..

I was looking at something called wrap n mat as an alternative to plastic bags when we need to take sandwiches/snacks along away from home. (which is always. Dd (11) and I both have type 1 diabetes, and PBJ's are always in my bag)

problem is, they are either lined with pvc (yuck!) or PEVA from China. I don't even know what PEVA is. anyway, it's a great idea, but I just generally dislike any plastic. we use lots of pyrex, but I don't like to send her out with glass.

anyone have any feedback?

Yes, I know it sucks that it is a plastic product.

I am not so much worried about the PEVA lining, but worried that it is made in China. Lots of manufacturer's are claiming their China made products are safe until they find out they are not safe. I'd be fine with the PEVA lining if it was NOT made in China.

How about waxed paper wrapped up like a "present" with a smudge of masking tape to hold it together?

Thanks for the stainless steel suggestion, I will look into those. I am trying to find something not too plasticy and reusable.

Whole Foods sells wax paper sandwich bags. It's Reynolds Cut-Rite sandwich bags.
(I reuse them depending on what I had in it before)

I use wax paper bags also. They are hard to find in the stores because they are not with the sandwhich bags they are with the wax paper. Usually on the bottom shelf:.

Definitely waxed paper bags, and I use small sized glass canning jars with metal lids for other lunch items. I have never had an issue with one breaking and the sizes are convenient.

I use the canning jars also. They work great and for some reason they are much less likely to get lost on the way home from school, compared to the plastic containers I use to send.

My two kids have Laptop lunch boxes and we absolutely love them!

When not using the lunch box we use wax paper.

I rediscovered waxed paper about a year ago... and love it. Just wrap it and secure with tape or a rubber-band.

We use waxed paper and seal with those free return-address stickers that charities are always sending us. They cost us nothing and are getting used instead of thrown away!

Pyrex is a special kind of glass that is very difficult to break. I've dropped my Pyrex containers many times without even chipping them.

What a great idea for the charity stickers! I will reiterate-I have sent the glass jars everywhere and never had breakage, and actually positive feedback from other people about not using plastic.

I own a wrap n mat and I think you could easily make one. It's really just a piece of fabric with velcro closure...I'm sure you could find some type of fabric to line them with that would wipe clean and that isn't made in China...or u could make it just out of a washable fabric and then line it with wax paper that could possibly be reused a few times...pm me if you want the dimensions of the wrap n mat to try to make your own.
