Classic Christmas Music

Anyone have any recommendations for classic Christmas music? Any genre of classic style will do, from Irish to American standards but I'm specifically looking for traditional carols.

I already have Christmas with the Rat Pack, The Christmas Song cd by Nat King Cole, Christmas with Dino by Dean Martin, Christmas with the Beach Boys, both of the Harry Connick Christmas CDs and Michael Buble Let it Snow.

I bought a Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby CD at Kohls for $5 on Saturday. It's one of thier charity cds. It has a really good mix of traditional songs.

I generally have a strong dislike for Elvis, but love his Christmas CD.

Nat King Cole is always the first thing that comes to my mind. It's just not Christmas to me w/o The Christmas Song and my favorite is O Holy Night.

I have a Ray Charles Christmas album that I like very much. It's about half traditional carols if I remember correctly.

The Vince Giraldi Trio...aka the Charlie Brown Christmas! And growing up we always listened to Anne Murray.

If I didn't listen to the Merry Christmas album by Johnny Mathis, it wouldn't be Christmas!

I buy Christmas music every year and have a large assortment. One I bought near Christmas last year was an album based on Alfred Burt songs. I really like it. Caroling Caroling: The Alfred Burt Christmas Collection. Lex de Azevedo with the Millenium Choir is the performer.

At the same time I bought that one, I also bought one called Welcome Christmas-Carols & Lullabies from Around the World by Phillip Brunelle & VocalEssence Ensemble Singers. That one is $9.99 on the iTunes music store and has 25 songs. I bought it because I was specifically interested in the Christmas in the Southwest series, because I heard it at a concert. There are 11 songs from the Christmas in the Southwest part of the album and they are:
Oh, Mi Belén, El Desembre Congelat, Alegría, A La Nanita Nana, Las Posadas, Campana Sobre Campana, El Belén Tocan a Fuego, El Noi de la Mare, Chiquirriquitín, El Rorro, Fum Fum Fum!

I like the Mediaeval Babes Mistletoe & Wine album too.

And my old standby is Songs of Angels by the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers. If I could only have one Christmas album, I think this would be it.

I bought this one last year too, I think: http://aroundthehearth.com/ Christmas Around the Hearth. The artists were at a big craft fair here. I love buying "local" music and this is a great album.

I also got the Jackstraws Christmas album, Great Dickens, from the same craft fair, and that one is a lot of fun.

Thank you, this was exactly what I was looking for to add to my collection.

I have and love Christmas Star, by the Cambridge singers. Really nicely arranged traditional chorals.

And, a different kind of classic -- the Phil Spector Christmas album! OK, I guess it's kind of weird now that he's a murderer, but the music's great.

I like all these!

What about Harry Belafonte's Christmas album? Or Louis Armstrong? Or Sinatra or Crosby? These are what I like to listen to this time of year.

I just bought a compilation on iTunes for 9.99 that has 33 classic Christmas carols on it. It's called Piano Christmas and it's all piano music, no vocals.
I find it very soothing to listen to.

Here is a list of some from my childhood. My brother just sent me these.

Christmas Around the World-Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The Little Drummer Boy-Harry Simeone Chorale

Joy to the World-Eugene Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus

The Glorious Sound of Christmas-Philadelphia Orchestra Eugene Ormandy, and theTemple University Concert Choir

Menotti, Amahl and the Night Visitors ( original cast of the NBC Telecast, Christmas Eve, 1951

The Christmas Revels-John Langstaff, director

The Holly and the Ivy-Clare College Choir

John Denver-Rocky Mountain Christmas

Barry Manilow-Because it's Christmas

Aaron Neville's Soulful Christmas

I know I've got some Celtic-y stuff, but it's in a shoebox in the basement right now! I was rearranging my CD shelves and haven't gotten all my Christmas music out yet.

Oh, and we have Nat King Cole, too, but he's been mentioned a bunch.

Sorry, some of those at the end aren't very traditional...I was trying to cook dinner and mess with my computer on the counter at the same time. A bad idea for all kinds of reasons.

Look at the Revels website. The CDs from the shows are different (medieval, scottish, scandinavian, Elizabethan, etc) but all feature traditional songs and are gorgeous. I don't even celebrate Christmas but I go to the Revels every year and I love this music.

The original CD "The Christmas Revels" is one of the best.

Are you in Boston or Seattle? My brother used to sing with the Revels when he lived in those places! You may have seen a show he was in!

He stopped doing it when he moved to Chicago...it was done very differently there.

I have a Victorian Revels CD and the the seafaring one ( can't remember what it's called) on DVD. And The Christmas Revels that you mentioned.

Good stuff!

Although I don't live there anymore, I've seen the Revels in Boston many times - I probably saw him.
