Elf, Polar Express or The Grinch? - Page 2

Okay, my family actually likes all of those movies (definatley The Grinch the least).

I would NOT take a child to see Polar Express as their first movie theater movie. DS was terrified of it in the theater--- the train whips around a lot and the toys look scary. Now, this is not an easily scared child, but it was definately overwhelming for him in the theater (he was younger, though).

Both my kids liked Elf when they were that young, but it is not animated (which tends to keep kids attention longer).

I would not recommend any of those movies. My kid HATED the Polar Express and found it quite scary; Elf is for older folks, and The Grinch--Bleargh! You would be better off not taking the kids and just watching the REAL Grinch on television.

My kids liked Elf too. It's really sweet, it's not rude or scary. I thought Polar Express was scary.

We own the POLAR EXPRESS and our kids LOVE it they are 6,5,3,1 and all of them love to sit and watch. i think it is the best ot of the ones you mentioned. My 3 yr old dd was scared of the Grinch.

My dd is not at all sensitive to movies normally. She has seen ALL of the Harry Potter and Pirates movies with no problem.

But, the Jim Carey Grinch scared her half to death!!!! She saw it a week ago and has had nightmares every night since. Last night, she woke up, and calmly asked us if "there are any grinches in the area". I just thought it was an awful movie. The original is much much better. We are renting that to try and "undo" the damage.

I have never seen Elf so I cannot say much there.

Polar Express scared the crap out of ME!!! Derailing trains on cracking ice is about the worst nightmare I can think of Dd did not really like it, she thought it was "creepy" but, was not scared.

My four year old cousin LOVES Elf. And it's really fun to watch it with him. When Buddy calls Miles Finch an "angry little elf" my cousin told his father, "That's not funny in real life though."

just my 2 cents--
dd then 3 was definately scared by the Polar express when the train --is going fast over some ice. It was on the big screen tho. I don't really remember anything else that was troublingto her in that movie, thats the only time we saw it----she LOVES and has loved grinch & elf for years...
When I want to really know anything that might be objectionable I

Elf is more of an adult movie, IMHO.

Anyway, my vote is for Polar Express. I bet it's pretty cool on the big screen.

My 5 year old DS was quite disturbed by the scene with the toys. He is fairly sensitive, but it really bothered him. Even months later, he mentioned it.

I haven't seen Elf but I think Grinch is OK, not great, not horrible.

Polar Express.. definitely.

All three of my girls love that movie! We bought it when it first came out two years ago (I think) so they were 6,4,and 2 and unlike ALOT of other shows or movies, they all loved it!

The soundtrack for that movie is FANTASTIC!!! Hot Chocolate is one of my most favorite winter songs of all time!

Just to clarify something I am noticing:

I would totally recommend The Polar Express as a *movie*.

Just not a FIRST experience on the big screen. DS never had a problem with it at home, but esp on IMAX it is pretty overwhelming.

if i had to pick one, i'd pick the polar express. my older kids were disappointed with it and so was i - it didn't even come close to meeting the magic of the book. however, the little ones seemed to enjoy it.

polar express

I love the Grinch so I would go with that. My kids dont really sit through full length movies too.

For that age I'd say the Grinch. A second choice would be Elf although it's a little harder for the younger ones to follow.

Isn't the Grinch PG?
Polar Express for sure. I have only seen bits and pieces of the Elf but I would say it is for adults. I hated the Grinch!!! Something that no one has mentioned is that the Grinch has a lot of sex jokes.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Turns out we didn't go after all - the movie was this morning and I'm feeling way too miserably sick for it. Oh well! I never told my son about it so he's not feeling disappointed, and I guess we will just wait until he's older or we see a move come out that looks like we can't miss!

Cheers!
