Can you be NT & gluten/dairy free? Any resources?

I'm trying to do NT. My daughter was just diagnosed with gluten/dairy sensitivity. now I'm kind of at a loss. Any resources for this?

I think you'll get a flood of answers today, my answer is simply yes, there are lots of folks here. I have found a lot of good ideas and general support from the no gluten/dairy folks here. I don't know anyone in real-life eating no gluten, no dairy, so this forum has been a real help to me, mentally, knowing that I'm not alone trying to do this. I don't know of any concise online resources, I mostly scour the old threads here in Traditional Foods.

This is where I am as well. I am hoping we can heal this and at least tolerate raw goats milk products (as we have preggo goats right now!). I feel like the broths and soups and other general knowledge is helping us to do this.

Dairy and gluten free is pretty much a Paleo diet.

There are a lot of people who are GFCF on this board. I'm sure they'll come along any minute now!

We are not GFCF, but I LOVE the nourshing our families menu mailer and it is, as well as being traditional foods. It is worth the money and if I was just starting out GFCF it would be a life saver IMO.

That's what I'm doing right now, plus I'm also staying away from legumes including soy.

Try searching for "paleolithic diet" or "paleo recipes". The concept behind "cave man eating" is like NT but it goes back farther- before aggriculture. It basically means lots of meat, fish, poultry, and eggs with veggies and nuts. But if you're still including beans and GF "grains" (rice, quinoa, etc) you'll have more options than just Paleo type foods- so you can add rice as a side dish to a Paleo type recipe, or modify some TF by using GF grains in place of gluten-containing grains.

The other suggestions to look up paleolithic nutrition are really good.

There is also a GF/CF yahoo group specifically for people following NT: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/GFCFNN/

We are mostly GF/CF here too. It's really hard at first, but after some time you adjust. We sub coconut oil for butter a lot, and coconut milk for milk/dairy in smoothies. My boys can still eat oatmeal, so often they have that for breakfast (with coconut oil). They also like kippered herring ($0.79 at the grocery store for a container), so they have those often as well. For lunches we often fall back on something with rice noodles - spagetti, and some other meat with the noodles. Not as NT as I would like, but oh well. One bonus is that having this kind of allergy really forces us to eat better. The short cuts when I'm having a dinner making temper tantrum (lol) cannot involve fast foods or anything too processed. It has truly helped clean up our diet in many respects. But it's a big adjustment.

Garden of Eating by Rachel Albert-Mastesz was great for me when we were first GFCF. Its definitely a paleo book, but the recipes are very NT. Our local library had that cookbook.

We've also been doing a lot of asian-style cooking because most of the recipes there are based on rice as a grain, and very rarely use dairy. My DH is Thai so he loves that style of food.

My kids and I are GFCF. My website has gobs of GFCF recipes, it's the one MCsMom mentions in her post. It's in my sig line.

I was going to mention Garden of Eating but see that someone beat me to it. So I will second it

Kerryann,

I am interested in your mailers. Is there a gf/cf option?

Chlobo, the beauty of KerryAnn's mailer (besides tasty recipes, already written-up) is that it's _already_ GFCF. Amazing, huh? There are a few lines that may say butter or X other fat, or something along those lines, but it's small things and there's always a GFCF ingredient listed.

That's awesome. I've been wanting to try it. This might be the push I need.

Yes, we're GFCF, so every recipe in the mailer is GFCF, with options to add gluten or dairy in if you wish. For example, none of the Mexican recipes call for cheese as an ingredient, but you can use it as a garnish. For recipes calling for flour, I tell you how to do both gluten containing and gluten free versions if necessary.

We love the menus! And considering that I think we might be going CF as well as already being GF, they are a huge help with dinner planning.
