A few weeks ago, my dad brought over some convenience foods to keep at our house for the times he watches the kids so that he would have some easy things to make for them to eat. (Somehow, in my dad's logic, making convenience foods is easier than heating up something I've left for them.)
He told the kids, and we reinforced with them, not to get into that stuff because he wants it available for when he's here. It's all in a box in the pantry.
Yesterday, Desta got into it anyway, and then went to great lengths to hide the evidence. Dh talked to her about it and notified her of the consequence of her actions. (And yes, there were plenty of other things available to Desta for snacks. She wasn't reduced to pilfering Grandpa's food out of desperation.)
This morning when she was getting ready for school, Desta came to me and said, "Momma, how do you always know what I do?" I said, "Well, it's my job as Momma to know those things."
She thought for a moment and said, "You must get paid a lot for that job!"
(Yes, for all her issues, Desta has a great sense of humor, something I have always valued in her.)
