A friend told me recently that when she had her baby, her OB told her that most women deliver their babies at night. She said that all mammals instinctively deliver at night as a safety mechanism. I'm just curious how many that is true for. *The poll is multiple choice

I voted 5pm which was when I had my second, but I had my other daughter at 9pm. I think it was dark the first birth (January in Seattle) and really light the second. 5pm August in Seattle!

All of my labors started late night/early morning, while it was dark out; but all of them were delivered during the day, while it was light.

I have one early morning (still dark) and three daylight. I labored all night with two of those. One went long and I gave birth at 9:24 a.m. With this one I'm projecting a nice 5-6 hour labor with a birth around 11 am - noon so someone can go get me some great take out for lunch. I prefer morning light to afternoon. My night birth was great, though. Very peaceful.

Three in the 6am to noon category (2 of those before 7am) and one in the nighttime category.

First labor started with SROM in the early a.m. and she was born before midnight. Second labor started with SROM before 10 p.m. and he was born just before dawn.

It is generally true that diurnal animals give birth at night and nocturnal animals give birth during the day.

Things get a bit wonky here where there can be so many medical interventions, but most natural births are at night/early morning.

I want to say that you can read more about this phenomena in Sara Blaffer Hrdy's Mother Nature. Though I may be thinking of one of a number of other related anthropology texts.

He was born at 11:23pm. My water broke at 330am that day, but active labor only got going once we had pit around 6:30pm.

My children were all born at different times of day.

#1: 4:07 am ~ very early morning
#2: 8:07 am ~ morning
#3: 12:21 pm ~ noonish
#4: 3:44 pm ~ afternoon
#5: 11:23 pm ~ midnight
#6: 6:08 am ~ early morning
#7: 10:59 am ~ noonish

OH, just wanted to add. All my births were homebirths, no medical interventions at all.

DD1: 12:07 AM dark outside

DD2: sometime in the afternoon (not sure if it was before or after 6:00 PM) light outside, late April so it got dark late

DS: 5:00 PM dusk, mid November. I was in my basement bedroom and I'm not sure how dark it was at that point.

Yeah, my son was born at 8:14 a.m., but that was after mucho medical intervention. ;-) I think it would be more... telling... to break it down by whether you had a completely natural birth progression or not.

Interesting about the eyes. My first was born at night in a dimly lit bedroom. She didn't open her eyes for several days- which I didn't realize until somebody asked me about her eye color and I didn't know!!! She did have her eyes open for a minute or so after birth, but the lighting was such that I coldn't distinguish her eye color anyway.

The other two were born in better lit rooms and had their eyes open a lot more. Basically, they were bigger (9ish lbs instead of 7.5 lbs) and acted at birth the way DD1 did at 2 weeks old.

My hazy rough estimates

#1--water broke at 10 pm-ish born around noon

#2--labor started in the morning, born at 8:30 pm

#3---water broke 2:30 am--born at 3 pm.

I'm all over the board.
