gained 6oz in 3 weeks?

Thread Starter
HRmph. I had such a struggle getting to exclusive breastfeeding, then found out yesterday that baby has only gained 6 ounces in the three weeks since I stopped supplementing. Talk about disheartening. :
He does still seem hungry at the end of each feed, and he cries a LOT. He does have fewer wet diapers than he did, but he has enough. He saw a ped yesterday who wasn't too concerned thankfully (and surprisingly). He's still hydrated.
I'm just so bummed and worried what this could mean for the future as we continue to ebf.
I'd been doing it all before...and am still doing a lot to help supply, but I thought we had *made it*. He's also still eating every two hours, though he does tend to have a longer stretch once, usually at night. I'm not able to get up any more than I am though, so please don't suggest waking him every 2 hours at night. I cannot function if I have to do that.

I don't have any advice. I just couldn't read and not send you a hug.

Hugs, btdt! I think you know what you need to do though, you already said he still seems hungry and cries a lot. Feed him then will be my answer. I know it's not the situation you pictured (or I pictured w/ all 3 of mine), but we all do the best w/ what we have. More hugs!

Have you posted your concern about his weight in the NICU/Preemie thread? I think a half of pound is great for a preemie. I am sure someone has mentioned using a SNS system, but that could be a way for your baby to get more satisfied.

Had to come back and post again, because I remember everything you've been through (read your previous posts). This must be really really frustrating for you.

So maybe you'll be supplimenting again, but your baby is getting a large chunk of his nutrition and calories and antibodies etc from you! And all that snuggly breastfeeding time is helping him to develop sensory processes and emotionally. If he needs supplimentation then he needs it. That in no way lessens the breastfeeding!

So sorry to hear of you lack of progress. I hope your supply increases again.

Oh, I am so sad to read this because I truly know how hard you've worked. I have zero advice for you but want to offer moral support. Did your ped give you a percentile based on his prematurity?

I have an SNS I used exactly once, I hated it. It's yours if you decide you might want to go that route.

well 6 ounces isn't terrible... I dunno. I think if it were ME, I would keep at it with ebf for another 3 weeks (unless he seemed REALLY unhappy and hungry). I don't think that's long enough to give ebf a fair chance. How's he looking weight wise? I know my LO is ranking very low on the percentile chart, but she's got meat on her thighs and nice chubby cheeks. Maybe he just need to get into the swing of things a bit more? It's possible that the first week he might not have gained any while trying to adjust to just breast milk and those 6 ounces were in the last little bit. I've read a few of your threads and I know how much you have gone through. You should be so proud how well you are doing. You're going to look back at this time someday and be amazed at how strong of a person you are.
