What age does a child have to be in school (public, private, registered to homeschoo) in California?

6 at the start of the school year.

Slight correction, State education code states complusory education starts the year the year the child turns six by Dec. 3rd. So if you child turns 6 in November they need to start school that year. Even though it after the start of the "school year".
