It makes it difficult for DD to latch on w/o hurting me but the other breast doesn't provide enough milk when I rely on it while I give the defective one a break. Glad everyone got a kick out of Mount Saint Butthole. I still crack up when I think about it. Luckily, there have not been any further eruptions to date.
I had lots of BF challenges from the start. My LC was like my BFF for a while. First, he couldn't latch on to the left b/c my nipple was too big (used a nipple shield for a while and eventually weaned off of it). Then, I had an excruciating plugged duct for a while on the left. Then, I had extreme nipple soreness on both sides. Then, suddenly around 7 weeks, I think he had an off day and my right breast became incredibly engorged and clogged up. I did every remedy under the sun. I had mastitis. I had to stop nursing on the right after about a week because it was so painful. So I have not nursed on the right since mid-October. I have seen two breast specialist docs about it. It is just clogged ducts but I could never clear them out enough, and now the nipple is sort of hard and flat from the clogs and DS cannot latch on. So I'm pumping the right and nursing exclusively on the left. The right side produces less and less so I figure it will shut down eventually.
I have now heard so many stories about women who successfully nurse with only one breast. So it can be done.
I think yes, your supply will increase on your other breast. Initially, because DS couldn't latch on the left, it was used less and my right produced double what the left did, which I think eventually lead to my engorgement problem. Now my left produces 10x what the right does. It is pretty amazing.
You might talk to an LC about your funky nipple. I know some people are very anti-nipple shield, but honestly it helped me for a while and maybe it would be a good temporary help for you, too.
Good luck and hang in there. I never imagined I'd have so many BF issues... it has been hard but now it is awesome.
