whats going on?

Hello everyone:

This is my first time posting. Ive been trying to figure out whats going on with my son. He's been gaining weight quite well but when he breast feeds especially at night its as though we are fighting. He would start sucking and then after a while he would be on and off the breast. He would get really frustrated but he keeps going back and forth. In addition to this he wants to suck all the time. This usually does not happen during the day.

I dont know if its the lack of milk that makes him do this but when he does this my breast still feel full. I have an over supply of milk and have been block feeding for the past 2 weeks. Added to this I have been using a nipple shield because of inverted nipples. I have been trying to wean him from the shield but have not been successful, although within the past week he has latched on about three times, so there is hope.

Has anyone ever experienced this? I breast feed on demand but sometimes Im afraid to because he has been spitting up quite a bit and I dont know if this is because he is being overfed or if something else is going on.

I hope this posting is not too confusing. Any comments/ suggestion are appreciated.

Thanks in advance

well, I am no expert, just struggling along as well, but my 3 month old has been doing the same thing. I just started taking away the breast and lo and behold she is happy to play. Its her way of refusing but she will keep popping on and off making me think she still wants more. I thought I had no milk at night or something but that's not it. She just wants to look around. So, that's just my discovery over the last few nights. WIsh I would have figured it out sooner

Maybe he's just comfort sucking and he's getting made because milks coming out? That'd be my best guess. Hope you figure it out

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. Im thinking that it might be because the milk is slowing down. I'll try compressions and see if that makes a difference.

My daughter eats substantially less at night and then makes up for it during the day. I'm wondering if maybe he just wants to kind of top himself off and then be done?

I also have over-supply. My DS#2 does this (and cries about it) when he is getting the wrong type of milk -- when he's getting foremilk and he wants hindmilk, or he's getting hindmilk and he wants foremilk. I've found that if I simply switch breasts he is usually happy. Usually.
