Ahhh, nothing like old carpets...

We just moved into a fabulous home, only problem is I didn't remember the carpets were this bad when I viewed the place. We have already ripped out the carpet in the main bedroom, and voila, hardwood floor. But the other rooms are a different ball of wax. The carpet can and will be ripped out, but the carpet backing is stuck to the wood floor ( plywood? hardwood? cannot tell) and it is not lovely to behold. How the heck do I get this stuff off without using some corrosive chemical and without ruining the floor underneath? Any advice is needed.

Also, does anyone know of a non-toxic stain for wood floors? Or a varathane? Do I have to varathane it? How about linseed oil? Thank you!!!!!

I dunno. The trading spaces forums sometimes have interesting tips for things like that. Maybe you can try there. I saw a four page thread there once for getting that popcorn stuff off your ceiling, I was awed.

Once dh and I get a house I will definately be lurking there lots.

Crossing my fingers that is hardwood under your other floors. That would be fantastic! Why people ever cover those beautiful floors with icky carpet is beyond me.

I have severe allergies so I am a big carpet hater. This is a biased and uninformed opinion based on my own experience. Carpet has its good points I am sure.
