Nursing Strike or Weaned?

We've all been sick (cold). My 18 months old actually had to throw up for the
first time (not baby spit up) on Friday and -just like when he got sick
on our trip back from Europe this summer- he reverted back to nursing 100%, no solids, no water, just breastmilk.
Friday evening he felt a lot better. Saturday he seemed almost normal
again but beginning Saturday evening he didn't want to nurse anymore AT
ALL!
He usually nurses to sleep and nurses several time through the night
but he refused every single time.
It was a rough night. Without nursing we had to get up a bunch of times
and walk/rock him back to sleep. This morning he still doesn't want to
nurse even a little bit. He always nursed waking up!
Why is it suddenly over? His nose doesn't seem stuffy enough to make
him not want to nurse. Is that how weaning happens? Is he weaned?
We just started trying for an '08 baby and I was totally motivated to
tandem nurse and now he quits before we even get there?!
He doesn't even want to hang on to me like he usually does and wants to
be carried around by his dad!
Any thoughts?

i would take him to the doctor to see if he has an ear infection or something, maybe laying in a nursing position hurts his ears? i dont think 18 month old babies will wean themselves.

He's nursing again although he continued to boycott the engorged, painful side for a day and just stuck the side that didn't need 'help'. Go figure...
I spent half a day organizing my spare bedroom in an attempt to find my Avent Pump. I still haven't found it but the spare bedroom (used as storage) looks great! I love it.
He has nursed to sleep for a nap twice since then and also nursed to sleep at night but he refused during the night. Seems like he's night weaned himself? He still wants to have body contact though to sleep but no more ni-nis I guess.

So glad we are back to almost normal. I wasn't ready for weaning. Plus 24 hours without nursing makes me think that is nursing burns 500 calories a day, parenting without nursing must burn at least twice as much because of all the walking, rocking and dancing!

I still have no idea if he had an ear infection. How long do they last? He seemed pretty chipper yesterday and is completely back to normal today. When he was very sick though he just wanted to be held upright and not lay down so maybe something was up?

He's a big kid (32 pounds, 35 inches at 18 months) so during the day a lot of times we do nurse upright (sitting on my lap facing me) because he wouldn't even fit laying across my lap. He didn't want that either.
