December Dingos ~ Running Through the Holidays! - Page 43

BBM, I hope that sweater is a good fit. I would only be worried about the length of the sleeves and body. Sounds like it will be a good fit, around.

Poppy, I'm wondering the same thing about bathrooms. Oliver is 6 and I still don't let him go into a public men's bathroom unless 1) It's a single bathroom with a lock on the outside door, or 2) He's assured me that there is no one in there and I am waiting outside, or 3) I'm very comfortable with that particular bathroom (like at school). But, this also means that dh is stepping up in the bathroom duty area. When we're together and Oliver has to go potty, dh will take him. That's very recent. We had a huge argument (Oliver and I...dh was on my side, too) about this very issue when he was barely 4. He was quite certain he could take down and pin any man who tried to get to him in a bathroom. He had no concept of his own limitations. I wonder if that's a male thing. Now, at least, he knows I'm not going to budge on the rules so he doesn't try to disobey. But, I know the time is coming soon when women won't want him in their bathroom anymore. I need to start loosening the reigns. I loved the Dean K. story. That's hilarious!

We are Mario Bros. fans, here, too! My little brother (who is almost 30) brought our old Nintendo over for Christmas and taught Oliver to play. It was really fun!

Eks, Oliver has been so difficult lately, too. I'm sure that for him it is a combination of bad diet and too little sleep. Getting back on our regular schedule will help with both. As far as computers go, we haven't had much TV in our lives. Very little reception and no desire to pay for satellite. But, they have been using the computer from the very beginning. Naomi started with Jumpstart Preschool back in '96 and we haven't looked back. They don't have a lot of games but they do play online games at PBS and Nickelodeon. As they've gotten older, they also use miniclips.com. I probably use the computer the way a lot of parents use TV (and the way I would use it if we had it). They play for less than half an hour a day, a few times a week. However, if I'm really busy or I'm letting them stay home without me, the computer keeps them busy and they forget to fight. I use it so much that I'm not a good example. I also have strong opinions (what a surprise, eh?) about the use of computers in school. Like someone else said, I think moderation is great! I need to be more moderate in my own use of the computer. I know that this is impossible, but it almost seems like today's kids innately "know" how to use computers. It's uncanny.

truelife and tjsmama!!!

Welcome home, JayGee! The January Fitness Challenge looks fantastic!

Moonshine, I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. Is there a chance you have a rib out of place? That has happened to me a couple of times. The worst was when Sophia was a tiny baby. I couldn't lay down in bed...had to sleep sitting up. Couldn't take a deep breath. Could hardly move! It took a couple trips to the chiropractor to make it better. I hope you feel better, soon!!!

Mommabelle, 19 floors with two kids! Yikes! I hope they get the elevators fixed! Let us know how the Madrigal goes! I wish I could be there.

Megs, Happy Birthday!!! Congrats on the new cat!

Kate~mom, GL tonight!!!

Plady, I'm checking out BFL. It looks great. I'm sorry your hurt your neck. What a funny way to have it happen, too.

Towsonmama, I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors. That's really awful.

Balancin1, what a great resolution!! I totally agree with you. The Dingos are really good for your health...physical as well as emotional and psychological health.

JenLove, unless anyone else has already requested your copy of Eat, Pray, Love, I'll take it! I loaned my copy out and I don't think I'm getting it back. And that's a book I need in my library. I missed the discussion about it here, maybe? Maybe not. . Anyway, let me know how much. I'll PM you my address.

Monica, what a great year for running! And fast, too! I think it's great that you devoted an entire year to consistent, shorter runs. That's what I probably should do. I just lack the discipline.

Po7, is your MIL an alcoholic? Sounds like a frustrating get together.

We are too short on cash to go out with friends tonight, so we invited them to come over after they go out. We could have quite a few people here, tonight! Folks are bringing an appetizer to share and we are providing cheese and crackers, popcorn, and beverages. I hope it's low key!

I'm trying to find a good half marathon training program. I may go with Hal Higdon's beginning program. It's 4 days of running with x-training. It's only 12 weeks, though, so it wouldn't start yet. But, I need to spend between now and when it does start getting back up to 4 mile runs. So, I'm going to write out my plan for that. I ran yesterday and the day before. Short runs at a high intensity. Unfortunately, when I went to upload yesterday's run into the computer, it wasn't there! On top of that, my account at mygarmin.com isn't working. I'm not sure if their software ate my run or if my device just didn't record. It appeared to be recording. I'm stumped. The positive side is that I think my heart is in better shape than I'd thought. I should be able to run at my target HR. I was afraid I'd have to walk a lot of the time.

Happy New Year!!! What are your resolutions? I need to write mine.

Monica, fantastic affirmations!!! I need to jump on the bandwagon, too.

No she isn't. It was soo out of character for her to do something like that. In the past I have called her to chat on the phone and she had been drinking....that has happened a few times maybe 5 or 6 years ago. She is an awesome grandmother, so I am so disapointed that she would choose to drink around them.....well, they didn't know that she had.

Other than last night we had an awesome time with MIL like we usually do.

On little boys and public restrooms.....my ds is 8, and I am just now finally starting to feel comfortable with him using the men's room by himself. On occasion if I don't feel comfortable I will have him come in the ladies room with me....he hates that and thinks its unfair no matter how much I try to explain my concerns. If he goes in the men's room I stand right outside the door and wait for him.

I've been a little bored today and can't wait to go home. I'm getting stressed about the madrigal thing and keep thinking about everything I need to do. The good thing down here is that I've gotten in some great swimming and walking everyday.

I'm reading along, will post personals when I get home.

Happy New Year!

My year end stats: 118 runs for 579.5 miles. 140.5 miles under goal, though. Have yet to come up with the 2008 goals!

No last run of the year today as being on call for my group is killing me. Maybe a first run of the year tomorrow, though?

Kate! Happy run through Central Park! Thinking of you, a few miles to the south.

On the bright side, I used my supercool new Forerunner to do an interval workout this morning (10 reps of 2 min speed, 1 min rest) and was able to maintain at or under 9 min pace for my speed reps. But then I stupidly decided to round the corner to my mom's house (literally 20 yards from the door) on the sidewalk instead of the street because there was a car at the stop sign. Hit a patch of ice and down I went. I actually landed ok, just a big old bruise on my hip, and a little bruise on my wrist, but I'm being a hyperchondriac about my wrist because I've had two surgeries on it. At least I had already planned to take tomorrow off! And I smashed my laptop power cord in my stepdad's recliner last night and killed it, so not only am I stuck using my mom's ridiculously ancient and slow desktop to feed my internet addictions, but I can't even download my workout to check it out. Doh. DS was cranky all day today. Out with the old year, I say, bring on the new! I can't wait to get home later this week so I can get back into my normal routine and workouts...less running, but more spin class, and snowshoeing and hiking with friends!

Happy New Year to my new friends here! My big New Years resolutions are to try to live a little greener (I've been meaning to set up recycling for months but have just been too lazy to get around to it), continue with the path of self-fulfillment through fitness that I started this year, and to come through my relationship issues as a stronger and happier mother and woman.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Today while running, I had tingling numbness in my right arm. To the point that I cut my workout short and came home and could hardly type "numbness in arm while running" into google. None of the hits seemed to apply, though - I wasn't dehydrated, I'm pretty sure I wasn't running with poor posture, I'd only been running about 10-15 minutes when it happened so it was a prolonged stress type thing... I have to admit I was a bit freaked (my MIL had a massive stroke when she was 50 so I'm extra paranoid about things like sudden numbness!) but felt kind of silly afterward for being so worried. Anyone have any idea what that was? I just started running about 4-5 weeks ago, I only do 2-3 miles and only a few days a week (I workout every day for 50+ minutes, but its just not always running). It felt just like I had hit the funny bone in my elbow really, really hard - except I didn't hit it. There was a little bit of tingling numbness above the elbow, but it was most intense in my forearm and my thumb. It faded about 30 minutes after I finished my workout.

first run of the year - done. about an hour, 1/2 muddy trails and hills and 1/2 some sort of bike path. got back to find everyone had just gone off to the pub without me. not a problem really, i don't think my stomach can handle any more alcohol for a while.

Queen of Cups - that's really odd, i've no idea what might have happened.

this happens to me all the time. for me, it's accumulated stress and tension in my shoulders, and then my arms don't get enough circulation when running. I can deal with it pretty well by really focusing on my posture, particularly keeping my shoulders down. I don't think they're ever up to my ears or anything, but I can push my shoulders down a bit from what feels natural.

Queen of Cups, whenever I am getting back to running, I have something like that. For me it is something with shoulder posture and tight pecs. After I get back into the groove of regular running for a while, it works itself out and I don't notice it.

I'm thinking about going for a run today but I'm terrified of either hurting my ankle again or finding out it still hurts. Anyone want to give me a boot?
Towsonmama - Here's a gentle boot for you. Don't push it too hard, you're still supposed to be off it right?

And here is the new thread for January!
