why is bleach bad?

Why is bleach bad? I've got some very stained baby clothes that I'd love to get clean. I've tried Shout and OxyClean, but neither work. I know bleach will do the trick, but I think I remember hearing it's not so good for us. Why not and does anyone have any alternatives to recommend?
Thanks

I have been using a tto based stain remover without any chlorine bleach with excellent results. This stain remover even removed a "set in" blood stain on a favorite sheet that had accidently went through the dryer on hot and had been sitting for at least a year. I sprayed it, let it stand for 2 days and then washed on a regular cycle and there was no trace of the stain, the sheet is now like new!!!

i just read something about it that made alot of sense to me. i always wondered about chloine, cuz it evaporates out, so i wondered how it could hurt you if it isnt left in the clothes. however, there are dioxins in bleach that have been linked to all kinds of cancers, so i think it isnt just the clorine. the dioxins go into the water , into the ground eventually , and pollute the environment. i dont know a whole lot about it can cant remember the name of the book i just read that in! lol. its 2AM , forgive me!

anyway, for whites, the sun is AMAZING at whitening.
