Questions about switching kinda late in the game

It looks like I'm going to have a homebirth - and I'm so excited! I do have a couple questions though -- I am fairly close to the birth, and I need to, I guess "break up" with my hospital midwife group. They have been great - but they won't come to my house, and given the choice I have chosen homebirth Can anyone offer me any advice? I am planning on simply explaining that I'm switching at my next appt (since its tuesday) and asking for my medical records at the same time. My due date is December 29th, so I don't want to dilly dally at all about getting switched over.

TIA

I wouldn't say another word to them about the homebirth. If your homebirth midwife wants records then ask the hospital based office for copies thus far for your, uh, scrapbook.

i started seeing a hospital-based mw and then switch. since i wanted to keep our relationship open for after the birth and in general for just in case (I did like the midwife a lot, it's just that i still wanted a homebirth), i decided to talk to her. she was very receptive. we hugged, and kissed and she was great about it.
i would tell them how much i love their practice (and i understand that it is tru for you), but you have done a lot of soul searching and realised that you want a homebirth. if only they came to your house ... but they don't do that, so you have to switch, that is pretty much how the conversation with my midwife went.
but you know your midwives better then I do. so if you're afraid that they might nor be so positive about this, then don't tell indeed.
good luck!

I think for insurance purposes I have to actually make the switch. I know that I need to get precertification for the hb midwife from my insurance company (today - this is all happening rather fast) and then my appt with my hospital based mw is tomorrow. I have mentioned multiple times that I had been planning a homebirth, and wanted a homebirth and so far the MW group have been supportive, but then my mother was very supportive too until I made the final decision to stay home, and then voiced her objections.:

Valeria_vi that is exactly how I hoped my conversation would go! I'm going to maybe play it by ear and keep my fingers crossed.

Congrats! I switched at the beginning of my third trimester.

I simply called and asked for copies of my medical records to be sent to my home address and explained that we were switching care providers. No one batted an eye.

It's up to you whether or not you want to mention anything about home birth. You know your current CNMs best and the laws in your state. I live in a state where HB is "alegal" and I know for a fact my former CNMs are extremely hostile to HB.

The bottom line is that you don't owe them an explanation and can be as vague as you like while still getting what you need.

Best of luck!
