Backwards numbers? Kinder/6 yr old

Is this age appropriate? DD is 6 yrs old, in Kinder, and writes ONLY her numbers backwards. Occasionally she'll have a backwards letter, often she asks me how to write a letter then when I tell her she says, "Oh yeah!" It's ONLY her numbers that are backwards consistently.

Is this age appropriate or am I looking at some sort of dyslexia that we need to seek help for?

dd writes most of her numbers backwards too. Most of her letters are the right way. I think its pretty normal. Ask the teacher though if you are concerned about age appropriate learning.

We asked about this when DS was in K as well. The K teachers said they didn't start to worry about backwards numbers or letters until the end of 2nd grade. I wouldn't worry about it unless the teacher said something.

Oh, that's actually encouraging. Ok. Thanks. I might still mention it to her teacher, and keep an eye on it, but this makes me feel a little better.

My son does this much of the time too (1st grade). He is still able to add correctly despite it. I don't remember it as much in K but he seems to be growing out of it.

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering the same thing about dd. She writes a few of her letters backwards and I was concerned it could be a learning disability but since she is in k and her letters are for the most part the right way, I guess I won't worry It sounds like it must be fairly normal

DS still does this a lot. It's age appropriate. Since your child gets the letters right, but only gets confused on the numbers, it's likely he'll outgrow it soon.

Ime, this is totally normal. You can always hang up a poster you make together illustrating numbers. This way, she can check the poster if she is unsure. Sometimes visual aids help. But I would not be concerned in the least for a 6 yr old.

My 5th grader still writes the number seven backward quite consistantly. At the beginning of the year he wrote the number three backwards also, but that has fixed itself. I figure it is just habit by now and as he catches the error himself most of the time, it will fade away.
