Baby Weight Gain

I am curious how old everyone's baby is and how much weight their babies have gained. Really I am curious how everyone elses babies are doing.

I am just rambling on, but would appreciate some support and advice. Thank you!!

My first DS is gained weight slowly. He was very very active and rarely slept. Did not sleep for more than a 1/2 hr at a time for 4 days after being born. He didn't nap. He is ENERGY! He only weight 20lbs and is almost 22 months. I thought there was something wrong with how I nursed him or with my milk. I was worried. I still worry about my caring for him properly because he is so small. I worried I wasn't doing something I should and didn't know what I wasn't doing. Does this make sense. I know slow weight gain and inadequate milk gain worries! I am so sorry for the moms whos babies are not growing fast. It is scary!!

My baby DS. Wow! He is 11 lbs and was 7 lbs 8 oz when he was born one month ago. He is growing so fast! He is a big boy. I love it. I do have some questions.

This may sound crazy but even though he is gaining fast I don't feel like he is eating much. How can that be? He is eating every 4-5 hrs during the day and 2-3 hours at night. He is difficult to wake. He grunts when he is sleepig and getting hungry but doesn't wake on his own very often. I can not believe how much he sleeps. He screams at me if I try to feed him sometimes. He roots and then I nurse him and he screams as soon as my milk lets down. I have a very hard, fast let down that chokes him. I have figured out (Ithink) he is wanting to nurse to sleep and then to full for the milk and that makes him mad. I really don't think he is getting much milk. I often don't feel like he is emptying my breasts after a feeding. I worry sometimes when he goes 4-5 hrs before a feeding continously for a 12 - 16 hr period. I feel like he is not getting enough milk. This is CRAZY! He is huge for his age and yet not eating much? I guess my worry is that my milk supply will drop from the infrequent nursing. I am used to the nursing on demand and nursing to comfort. He does not find comfort in nursing and does not want to eat unless starving. He screams at me when I try to nurse him before he is ready. I really am not nursing very often. I did for the first week but that is it. He is a convient baby, but that is not always a good thing.

I have had both sides of the spectrum. My 1st DS only wanted me to hold him for the first year and nursed day and night every 2 hrs for 14 months. He never wanted to be put down. I carried him ALL day. My DS #2 wants to sleep continually and doesn't like to nurse, but is "growing like a weed". There is not sense to this. I can't figure it out.

Mothers worry I guess. Worry about the babies not growing and then worry about the babies growing to fast.

He's growing and you're getting sleep. Try and accept this blessing. If you are worried about supply, you can always pump between feedings.

I also think your supply is just what he needs and you're doing okay -- but yah, if worried, maybe pump!

My son gained 6oz in 2 weeks and I was told that was really good. But that still would put him at less than a pound a month, so I think your babe is doing just fine on what you're giving him and how often he eats.

We usually feed every 3 hours and he's eating a long time. I wonder if he's not taking in enough in each sitting whereas your son may be a super sucker and able to swallow more than enough when he DOES eat.

I agree with the others.

Piper has gained 1.5 lbs in 3 weeks!!! I'm thrilled since I struggled with milk supply issues with the other two.

He's gaining weight, so I wouldn't worry about the length of time between feedings or the length of feedings. Some babies are just much more efficient at getting the milk out.

Both my babies have been super gainers (usually 8 to 10 oz/week for the first 4 months but in different ways. DD had short nursing sessions (5 minutes) but had them very frequently. DS still has fairly short nursing sessions compared to some (10-15 minutes) but can go 3-4 hours without nursing!
