bump on the head--UPDATE #8, #27

The baby has a bump on the back of her head. It's under her skin and moves around with the skin; the skin does not just move around it. It's gotten a little bigger over the last few days. It's on the lower right side of her head, but over her skull. There's no head to it like you'd see with a pimple. It doesn't seem to bother her.

What think ye? Ever have this happen to one of yours? Sebaceous cyst maybe? I'm trying to decide if I should call the Dr or do hot compresses for a few days and try to get it to go down...and call doc if it doesn't.

Never had one with The Bump. We just went to the peds office on Friday, too...I'd hate to drag all six kids back there in the bitter cold this week.

I am not sure, but I think it is a lyphm node. My baby has one on both sides of his lower head. I was told to not worry about it. I think they are lymph nodes. They will swell and shrink with the immune system fighting "bugs".

Yup, sounds like a lymph node. As long as it's mobile and tender it's not a problem. It should "slide" a little bit under the skin but feel kinda firm and a bit smaller than a little pea. Not sure on a baby how you can tell if it's tender since they can't tell you (and my LOs usually don't fuss when I palpate a lymph node...) You can massage them gently if you want which will help get the lymph moving a bit; sometimes the lymph can get congested in the node when they're fighting something. Common places for lymph nodes to get big are behind the ears, the base of the skull and base of skull but Lt/Rt of midline, under the angle of the jaw and around the carotid artery/jugular vein. I wouldn't worry unless it gets enormous and/or if it's immobile. HTH.

i had same with my son, dr confirmed it was lymph and its size was normal.

if it were me, i'd take her in to dr. just to know for sure what it is....

I called and the Dr. said that based on my description, it's mostly likely something that will just resolve itself. She has another "bump" high up on her leg where the elastic from her diaper meets the skin.

Looking up swollen lymph nodes, it would make sense that that might be the case as the kids had a nasty cough/cold virus making the rounds through the house last week and over the weekend.

My midwife, who is also a nurse, will be out here on Thursday, and I'll have her take a look at the two bumps, but chances are it's nothing to worry about as the Dr., and you all, have said.

Groin (underwear line in adult bodies) is another really common place to get swollen lymph nodes...I'm sure her little immune system is just working overtime with all the kids in the house

The bump on her head developed a whitehead on it. It was drained by the pediatrician and the pus--which was plentiful--was sent to the hospital lab. Dr. wants to rule out MRSA (staph). The bump on the left leg is about the same. There is now a little swollen mass on the right leg. Both of the knots are either on or right by the crease of her leg at the top.

Staph... She's only 2.5 weeks old. The thought makes me sick. : This is what we get for having a homebirth and getting donated breastmilk for her?

We'll know more tomorrow. Prayers would be much appreciated.

Wow... how scary. So sorry, mama. Wonder where a staff infection came from (if that's what it is)?

I was going to ask whether you had gotten the breastmilk donated, etc..

Hoping for an easy resolution. Granted, I was not an infant at the time, but I had a sebaceous cyst on the back of my head about 15 years ago and it developed a head and drained as you described.

Hoping it's just garden variety pus and not staph.

Oh..no no no!!! If anything the donated BM has been helping it not be as bad as it could be... It's just you think that you do everything "right" and stuff still happens. It just leaves me feeling : and : . But no, if she has one great thing in her corner it's that donated BM.
