Doulas-how do you advertise?

Hello, I am a new Doula living kind of far up north and I would like to get my name out there. I was wondering how most of you advertise. If you do it with brochures or flyers what online site can I use to do that with? Thanks!

I went to vistaprint.com and got free business cards (you just have to pay shipping for the basic, I fancied mine up a little and paid like $8 or something for 150 cards), then went to a chiropractor and a second hand baby/maternity store and asked if I could leave my business cards on their counter-- they both said yes, and I've gotten three clients that way since July. I could have gone to probably 10 other places (health food stores, massage therapy places, other chiro's) and gotten tons of clients but I can't handle a lot right now (I'm still in highschool). I am also planning to advertise on the ALACE website soon. Whatever organization you trained under probably has a advertise webpage for their students.

Hope this is helpful!

Craigslist is great because it is free. I picked up a few clients that way.

Hi Hannah!

From what I have heard, word of mouth will be your best friend. Tell your family and friends and your own midwife/doctor, massage & yoga & chiro first. I also second vistaprint. Good luck!

I also did free business cards from VistaPrint. I give them out to pregnant mamas that I talk to who seem interested and ask them to pass on my card if they meet someone interested. I also leave my cards at a LLL-type meeting. After 2 years of doing this, it's finally paying off. Last week I got 4 emails/calls from just my cards. One mama at church last week asked what I do and I said, doula. She asked for my card and said that she has 4 pregnant friends in Cambodia who will be flying here (to Bangkok to have their babies) that may want classes/doula and that she will praise the benefits of a doula for them! So by word of mouth as well.

(now if only I could actually attend those births... but my babies come first!)

--I do use Vistaprint (and I take advantage of every single free offer they send down the road
--business cards and flyers in OB and Family Practice offices
--tape my business card on the "what's a doula" page of Lamaze magazines and leave them in the doctor's offices
--take lunch to the local midwives or OBs and tell them about what I do (doesn't cost much unless it's a huge practice)
--listing in the Yellow Book
--set up a table at the local craft fairs/flea markets (costs about $20 and is a great way to meet a lot of people and get your name out there)
--put my name on every doula list I can possibly find on the interenet that's free
--tack a couple business cards to the supermarket bulletin board

OK, I can't think of any more at the moment, but I make a concerted effort to advertise in some way everywhere I go. michelle

You've listed some great ways of advertising. So, about how many responses do you receive from perspective clients per month? Also, about how many clients do you take on per month?
