Hi there,
I am almost 4 weeks postpartum and still have terrible PUPPPS. In fact, I think it got worse postpartum.

Is there anything I can do? My MW was starting to talk about steroids -- but I would really like to avoid that.

Any ideas? How long can this last?

Thanks

Yea, that is what my MW was talking about.

How many weeks postpartum did yours last? Did the medicine help? How soon after taking it did you notice things getting better? Did your DC seem to show any side effects from the meds?

I had it about 6 weeks. The medicine definately helped. I noticed improvement on the morning of the second day and it was completely gone the following day. If I remember correctly the doses are staggered... you take 4 or 5 the first day and then reduce it for the next 3 or 4 days.

I did not notice an increase in drowsiness. This was the point where she started to "wake up"... it might have happened anyway. But I was definately watching for problems because she had jaunduce and FTT for awhile at the beginning and I would have stopped immediately if I had seen any negative chnges.

You might look it up in the Medicines and Mothers Milk guide. I find them a terrific resource for these types of things.

4 cups daily of nettles, dandelion and milk thistle tea. I have had really good results with this with my PUPPS clients.

Thanks -- I have been taking milk thistle -- but not the nettles or dandelion. I will add those and see if that helps...

Hell....

PUPPS is hell....

Ok seriously, it is a benign really itchy rash that can happen in the third trimester of pregnancy. For most lucky people who get it, it goes away shortly after birth...but I am one of the unlucky who has it 4 weeks post partum. :

Here is some info:
Is it common to get itchy bumps on your abdomen?
Up to 1 percent of pregnant women develop a condition characterized by itchy, red bumps and larger patches of a hive-like rash on their bellies. This is called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) or polymorphic eruption of pregnancy.

PUPPP usually begins in the third trimester and is more common among women carrying twins and those having their first baby. The eruptions usually show up first on the abdomen around or in stretch marks (if you have any) and may spread to your thighs, buttocks, and arms. PUPPP is harmless for you and your baby, but it can itch like crazy!

Your doctor or midwife will want to see you for a diagnosis and will probably prescribe a topical ointment to give you some relief. She may also recommend an antihistamine. In severe cases, you may need a course of oral steroids.

PUPPP usually disappears within a few days after delivery, although it sometimes persists for several weeks. (In rare cases, it may even begin after you give birth.) Fortunately, it seldom appears again in subsequent pregnancies.
