Accessories for Blocks

My grandfather made some really wonderful building blocks for my daughters for Christmas (at my request.) He is a really wonderful and talented woodworker. My grandmother asked me today what I thought the girls would play with along with the blocks, as an accessory. She says my dad used to play with his toy soldiers with his blocks. I honestly can't remember what I used to use with my blocks (that my grandpa also made!) Any ideas?

I would love some wooden figures but it seems like all of them cost like $15-20 each!! I don't want to take advantage of my grandmother's generosity. Does anyone have any non plastic and affordable ideas?

PS-I am also making my daughters a quilted farm scene playmat, so I think I am going to purchase some farm animals from threesisters to go along with that.

You can get cheap wooden people here: http://www.caseyswood.com/shoppingca...index&cPath=46

They are really simple, but you can draw/paint on faces or attach fabric and yarn for clothes and hair. Some of them are kind of small so you'll want to look at the sizes depending on how old your girls are.

Our blocks often come out with the cars, We have a couple of flat pieces of wood in the with blocks and DD builds ramps, bridges, car washes etc. I think we have plan city cars.

This isn't nearly as fun as the other suggestions, but how about a drawstring bag or tote to store them in? You could personalize it with LO name. Just a thought.

Gramps actually made a personalized wooden box to hold the blocks in. I am thinking about buying 2 or 3 of the Holtztiger farm animals. And giving them 1 or 2 more for every holiday/birthday. I am currently making a quilted farm playmat that has drawstrings to hold the animals in. (Hopefully it will turn out the way I am imagining it!! Any other ideas are much appreciated though!
