trying to reduce shampoo use--help!

Hi all--sorry if this is a post that's been done before. My computer, though its DSL, is really slow on this site (anyone know why or what can help?), and searching the archives takes alot more time then I have.

I'm trying to reduce the amount of shampoo I use. I used to shampoo and condition everyday, but when my kiddo came I started to go a day and a half, sometimes two. My hair is average I'd say--greasy at the end of day 2 (day one being a wash with shampoo). I'm still taking a shower or bath everyday, but I'm trying to cut out the shampoo a bit. But today is Thursday, I shampooed on Tuesday and my hair is SO greasy today, despite rinsing yesterday and today--I gave my hair a good scrub underwater today, but I think it only activated my oil glands and added more oil.

Any help anyone? THANKS! Lea

Maybe try adding baking soda to your shampoo or just doing a rinse with baking soda.

Baking soda is used to strip hair of buildup...maybe it would help.

Why do you want to use less shampoo? I am wondering so I can provide more info.

Hmm, well I'm doing it because I've been hearing over and over that shampooing everyday isn't necessary, and your hair is healthier and looks better (once its adjusted) if you don't shampoo everyday. That essentially commercial shampoos so effectively clean your hair that they strip it which is why you have to use conditioner, and your oil glands work harder to make up for your stripping of the scalp, which is why you get greasy, which in turn motivates you to wash more often. So the companies are making tons of money. I want to save money, and hey, if my hair can look better in the process. . . Plus I figure I can affort Aveda if I wash less often Thanks!

Some people would think I'm weird....... but I wash my hair once a week.
I iused to wash more often, like every day/second day. The longer you leave it the longer you can go - so try three days for a little while, and then move to four etc..... you might have to deal with dirty feeling hair, but the hair will "get used" it pretty quick!

Get a shampoo made from natural products only (olive/coconut oil) and vegetable glycerin... I don't know what kinds there are in america but generally health food shops carry them. They are Sodium Laureth Sulphate free and also free of other shampoo crap - great for your hair and you only have to use them once every few days.

I dunno. I think some of that depends on hair type, my hair is very dry and frizzy so washing it everyday is bad for it. I don't think the same things should be suggested for different hair types.

I agree with the slow weaning part.

we stretchours just to save money. make sure your hair is very wet whisch will enabl;e you to wor kin a smaller amount. I also dilute nmy shampoo and conditioner. this helps it work into and spread out aroundmy head. I do this to my conditioner too.

use a quarter sized dollop of shampoo and a dime of conditioner. The personwho told me this had medium short hair and mine is on the long side so I have to use more but not a lot more.

Also shampoo once. lather rinse reapeat is just on the bottle so you will use more.
