thankyou Z-girl! I knew that beets, etc. could be used, but I never knew the proportions and my sons are really sensitive to art. colors and flavors, etc.
You know, Family Fun Magazine has a lot of great Easter crafts for kids. We haven't done them yet, but I will let you know. Anyone else?
How about some natural homemade Easter recipes for sweets and stuff?

Colored Easter Eggs Au Natural
I haven't checked out the Martha Stewart link yet, but I came across this:Natural Food Dye
1 Tbsp. spice or 4 cups chopped fruit or vegetable (or more for a deeper hue)
4 cups water
2 Tbsp. white vinegar
Combine all, bring to a boil, simmer 15-30 minutes. Eggs can be colored (& cooked) in the dye while it's being prepared. Or they can be hard-boiled in advance, then dipped into the prepared dye (which can be either cold or hot).
Some of the best spices & veggies to try: beets, red zinger tea, paprika, turmeric, yellow onion skins.
Happy egg coloring the old-fashioned way!

Lots of different colours!!
onion skins :ranges and yellowsred cabbage (shredded):midnight blue and teal
beet root:brown with a purple cast
beet tops :dove gray
spinach
ale greencarrots:yellow with olive tones
blueberries :deep blue
grape juice:deep lavender
raspberries: light fuschia
blackberries:dark fuschia
turmeric:vivid gold
tea: tan
coffee: brown
Put dye material and eggs in a pot and cover with water. Add a bit of vinegar..
Bring to a gentle boil about 15 minutes. After the 15 minute boil your choice is to run cold water into the pot to stop the cooking process or to let the eggs soak in their dye to get deeper hues. The choice is yours. You can give the eggs a nice sheen with cooking oil when they are ready to be put out on the table.
Amount of dyestuffs needed according to the author of the article:
fresh material: 2 cups per quart of water
dried material:2 Tbs per cup of water
ground spices: 2 tsp per cup water
Happy Egging
Su

Shards! That is so helpful, because I don't have the possibility of getting turmeric over here and was wondering how to do yellow. The spinach is great too! Wonderful! This is going to be fun. Now I just have to find white vinegar (not easy over here).
