Well that was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me

Around 11:15 tonight as iwas getting Bear ready for bed he apparently spit up and choked and stopped breathing for about 30 seconds. Thank God my DH was there because he is certified in CPR and I panicked and froze where as he came over thumped Bear on the back and Bear started breathing again. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me as a parent (or anything). So I totally probably over reacted and insisted we went to the ER. My DS has reflux, great.... I feel so stupid because where in theory i knew Babies spit up my oldest never, ever spit up. He has seriously only ever thrown up once in his life. my family are known for having stomaches like Alley cats. So what am I supposed to do about it. Will switching nursing to only one breast at a time help? Please give me some advice because I have no freakin clue as to how to proceed. I will add that he is gaining weight fantastically and growing several inches so it hasn't caused him to dislike the boob in any way.

ohhh I am so sorry, so scarey, glad all OK..

all my boys have reflux.. JAy jsut a little, Evan A LOT and Dean in between.. I totally know excatly what you went thru.. I remember the 1st time evan did it that badly and stopped breathing turned blue etc.. I FREAKED,, he was 2 wks old... I ma so sorry you had to experience those moments of sheer terror..

here's how we handle the flux... I never, I mean never, lay him flat,, all surfaces are on an angle and mostly he is held upright.. sleeps in car seat, bouncy, raised bassinette, swing but mostly on me making sure he is nearly vertical.. this is tough and hard on Mom but it helps a lot..

I also use Gripe water but not too close to a feed.. like maybe 20 mins after.. he stays totally vertical for at least 30 mins after feeds and never is les than a 45 degree angle

also he gets chiro (obviously) and cranial sacral as well as classic constitutional homeopathy

I was never comfy with the acid blockers.. here's my take.. they only decrease the acid production they do nothing to stop the mechanics of the flux... so it may stop the burn (gripe water does too) and maybe they might cry less and whatever but they are still fluxing and lowering stomach acid is horrible for their digestion and potential allergies BC not breaking down food as well etc. also the way I look at it, I WANT them to feel if they are refluxing so it is less likely to choke them or get into lungs if they are sleeping when it comes up I want them to wake and cry and cough etc so it does not hurt them more.. does that make sense?

some gve regalan which pushes everything thru faster so it is not in stomach as lng to come back up.. I have not looked into that one too extensively so no opinion..

OH evan slept in crib on a reflux pad (he would not co sleep)

I am sorry you are dealing with the flux.. it is hard I know but it does pass, the worst of it seems to be over by six mos (at least for us) and pretty much a non issue by a year (although evan is still a gagger)

OH and i break up the nursing into three shifts and burp in between adn keep upright and give a little time for the milk to get down.. so I try not to overfeed at one time.. also try to be sure they get as much fat rich hind milk as poss.. it stays down better and coats better

also I can not eat anything acidic or spicy esp fruit acids

Thank you, thank you for your advice, i was completely ignorant about this. i'm still in sock over last night but i'm glad i'm by far not the only one who has dealt with this.
