Hello all I am new to this board. Have never actually been on a board..but from what i have read thought it looked like a wonderful place to get some support for the many mothering issues I have...I just had a baby on 11/27 and expressed to my doc that i have some baby blues...he gave me a script for zoloft 50mg.....I breastfeed my new little one and I am "tandem" feeding with my 2 year old big baby boy....I am so worried about taking the medss...I haven't even filled the script....I am not completely down and out so if I couldnt take it I would survive I just thought it would help a little of the emotional issues..BUT I am conerned about all the info I read on the various websites....some say Take with caustion if breastfeeding some say very trace amounts are passed through...My number one concern is what is best for babies.....can anyone give me some legitimate advice here just not sure what to do

There are MANY of us here who have taken Zoloft for PPD while breastfeeding. In fact, it's the "safest" of the drugs since an extremely miniscule amount pass through in your milk.
You do have to weigh the cost/benefits yourself. Is the tradeoff worth it to you?
For me, it was. I took Zoloft for approximately 6 months while breastfeeding my third child (and took a similar drug for around 9 months with my first).

You can also call your local LLL leader or a local IBCLC breastfeeding consultant and ask for the information about Zoloft in Hales "Medications and Mother's milk" that will probably be reassuring and help you make an informed decision about taking care of yourself and taking care of your babies.

I felt VERY HOT for the first few weeks..not tired though!! I was able to work through the side effects in about 2 weeks (?) and then never had another issue.

I have been on Zoloft since March for PPD. In my case I had to take it because the depression was so bad I couldn't even care for my son. I was also very worried about how it would affect my son, but I was also not in any frame of mind to be able to make that kind of decision for myself. It would have been worse for him to have a mother who was terrified of taking care of him.
As far as I have been told by my midwives, ped, ob/gyn, this is a very safe med for a breast feeding mom to take. I do recommend that anyone considering taking this go to a psychiatrist so that you can be monitored. They are the experts. Also, my psych has me on the meds for a year, which is the standard treatment for any type of depression.
I have had no side affects at all, although I vaguely recall some night sweats in the beginning. Also, the first week was rough because I had serious anxiety from the drugs at first. That leveled off very quickly and then the dosage was upped to 50mg. Most psychs will start you on a low dose first and then go up.
Hope this helps.

Zoloft is truly the prescribed drug of choice for a breastfeeding mom bc of the proven safety of the drug. If yu are feeling the blues, take the meds. On a personal note, I took zoloft for almost a yr after my little one was born, and I am so happy I did, I had PPD after my third child that was never addressed. When it happened after my fourth I sought help around 3 weeks pp and I feel like the meds gave me my life back and helped me to truly enjoy that new and wonderful time with my baby.
