When Vitamin C is outlawed, only Outlaws will have Vitamin C!

Hehehe. That would make a good sig-line.

I admit the cough is freaky. My DD had pretty classic pertussis, except she swallowed the mucous instead of puking it, and there were a couple of times I held my breath waiting for her to breathe. I am not *afraid* of it though. Not anymore than Croup.

Truly, as someone who has had recurring croup since childhood, and pertussis once: Pertussis is FAR worse.

The only diseases that frighten me are diptheria and meningitis. Not because of their transmission but because of the way the disease presents. From what I have read, the disease progression isn't terribly obvious (especially since MDs are learning how to not recognize these diseases anymore). Your kid spikes a fever and BOOM your kid is dead. At least that is how the descriptions I read made it sound. We stopped vaxing after our ped forced us to give DD the flu shot. M/M/R don't scare me, and neither does CP.

Pertussis does scare me in an infant but since even fully vaxed people (and even recently vaxed) can transmit the disease, what *really* is the point of vaxing for it?

I'm not sure I want her to get the next round of shots but at the same time, I fear for DD's health if I don't.
Then put off the wbv and research what they would vaccinated for at the next visit. Research just those shots and diseases.

It seems that you think just because a child does not get vaccines they will get the disease. Not the case at all. We are still waiting to get diseases and my grandson is 10 yrs. old.

My other two completely vaccine-free grandchildren are the healthiest in any play group they attend and their mom is constantly taking them somewhere.

If they take it away, we'll learn how to make our own.

My thoughts exactly! I have already told DH that when the little ones are a bit older and we hopefully have some money, I want to take some classes on local herbs, finding them in the forest and how to use/mix them.

I have also read that rose hips are an excellent source of Vit. C. Just boil them up in a tea!

Personally, they can take all the supplements in the world away if they want. I am confident I can protect and heal my children with food alone. I am much more concerned about them taking away our access to "clean" food.

I was scared of pertussis when my baby was under 6 months. But now I'm not afraid of it at all. I've got my SA in the cabinet waiting in case I need it.

Like other said, I'm more afraid of the aP vaccine than the disease itself - even in a younger than 6 month baby (and I'm still scared of the disease in an <6 month baby).

I am certain I had pertussis in college, for about a year. I had a horrible, horrible croupy cough, which in hindsight was very 'whoopy' but I didn't know then that I could get whooping cough as an adult. I saw several doctors and was tested for tb, asthma, pneumonia, LUNG CANCER, and yet never was I tested for pertussis. Because, alas, I was vaccinated, is my guess.

Just FYI, the vaccine does confer immunity, but like all vaccines it is partial and temporary. Only about 80-85% immunity and lasts approximately 10 years. Unfortunately, many docs don't consider this when diagnosing respiratory illness . . .

But with continued boosting you can achieve herd immunity . . . but it's unlikely going to happen due to the need for frequent boosting . . . .

And really, no doc should confuse pertussis with asthma!!! Really! Pertussis is whooping cough, and asthma is reactive airway disease resulting in wheezing. Totally differnt in course and presentation.

don't do that mama, heat kills vitamin C! but they're pretty darn good tasting when you eat them raw, anyways! every summer, my sister and I would pick them while walking to the beach. I gave one to dd this summer and she loved it!

It's not possible to achieve herd immunity with a vaccine that does not prevent transmission.

I'm 99% sure my son and I had WC when he was about 2 years old. Not that big of a deal. I would never vax for it....ridiculous.

That is why my last ped dropped me. They said that it was a risk to ME because if C came down with diphtheria or something, they wouldn't see it because they wouldn't check for that. OK! GLAD I found a new ped who checks to see what disease you have! :

I am a teeny bit scared of pertussis but my toddler is past the risky age. When she was an infant I kept her pretty sheltered, as I think all parents should. I am as concerned about vaccine risk as I am of the disease.

I have a panic disorder where my throat closes up and I can't breathe. Sometimes it goes on for months at a time. At least pertussis goes away and you're immune to it. Do they have a vax for panic?

I don't know how old your brother is, but in the past a more reactive pertussis vaccination was used.

She said her mother, who I am sure had the older one.

I'm afraid of my son getting Pertussis. But I'm still not going to vaccinate him for it. My son has pretty bad issues (vomitting, etc.) with a normal cold/allergy cough. I think Pertussis would be incredibly hard on him.

[/quote] Appparently, in that case I wouldn't worry.
