I am a first-year teacher this year in a program for preschoolers with disabilities. I will have 12 five-year-old children in my class with disabilities ranging from speech impairment to profound autism. I believe in gentle discipline but I do not know much about it, because I'm not a mommy yet, just a babysitter
My question for all you wonderful mommies is this: how can I implement gentle discipline in my classroom? Some of the children do have behavioral problems. I already plan to redirect inappropriate behavior as much as possible, and my plan is to do that exclusively unless there is a consistent problem and then the child will have some "quiet time" to regroup before joining the class again. This will be in a place in the room, NOT alone. I don't really believe in time out but I think that sometimes these kids need a few minutes to themselves. I want to be armed with more positive ideas, though, in case problems arise. Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thoughts from those with experience with autism would be appreciated, and from everyone else, too! Maybe some "gentle discipline" books, too.
Sorry this is so long! Thanks to all!
Sarah
