I want to make a soft toy set for my neice for xmas. I thought I 'd knit them, but I don't think I can do it- I'm not a great knitter. Anyone used felt or any other fabric and had good luck?

I have had great results with needle felting...

A Little OT

Well, these aren't knitted or fabric, but so cute and easy to make yourself using beads.

cherries

grapes

I even found little crates almost exactly like these at our local craft store.

Felt is the perfect fabric to use. If you do a search in this forum on "play food" a huge thread should pop up. HTH!

I have been particularly worried about all my daughter's plastic made-in-China food. I've felt too busy to get together a pattern and fabric and everything to make it, though. Well, today, we were snowed in, and I took the craft felt I had on hand and made enough that I could get rid of all of her plastic food! All of this only took me two hours and I had no pattern, and my 2-year-old daughter thought watching me make it and "helping" it was the most exciting thing she'd ever seen. I'm so happy we did it. Pictures of felt food. The birthday cake is her favorite.

One tip, since you are winging it, banannas will not look right until there is a bit of brown on the ends or even just one end... I took forever to figure out why my bannana just didn't look like a bannana... the shape was right, the size was even pretty close, the color yellow was perfect... just not right without a few off color bits.

YES, YES, wing it! I had in my mind it was a complicated project, but once I sat down with some drawing paper, scissors, and needle and thread, I realized I really could wing it and it did not have to be perfect for my daughter to love it.

Great food, Bookworm!

You'll have to come over to the MDC Swaps forum. We *just* finished up a play food swap over there, and already some of the mamas are talking about starting another one up after the holidays.

Those are super cute bookworm!

Another vote for (using) felt here.

I usually cut a pattern on paper, pin it to the felt, cut, sew, stuff. So fun and easy. And if the felt being used is thin enough, older children can join in and do it with a blunt needle too.
