DS is 17 months old and naturally puts objects in his mouth. But lately he has been licking things :nana: whilst at the same time shaking his head and telling me "no no", "yucky", "don't put in mouth" an so on. He is very verbal and understands alot but this is one thing that we just cannot move forward on.
Yesterday he kept licking a jar at the deli because he wanted to eat the olives in it which is understandable. But then later in the day he was liking a spade in the garden. Then we went to play in his sandpit and he would call my name and then shove handfuls of sand into his mouth and wait for a reaction from me. I tried to ignore him, l tried to distract him, then l tried to nicely tell him not to eat the sand until l could no longer sit and watch him continue. When l stood up he went to run away from me. I grabbed and took him inside the house and told him that he could no longer play outside because mama said no eating sand but he didn't listen. He had a big cry. We hugged and then l explained to him again and he re-iterated. We went back outside later and same scenario again.
Today DS licked almost every toy and book one by one at a doctors clinic again whilst saying to me "yucky, no no, don't put it in your mouth" and shaking his head and his index finger at me all with a cheeky smirk. When l walk over to him, he either runs or tries to hide what he is holding so that l cannot remove it from him. Then at home he was licking CDs and the underneath the soles of shoes which l find quite disturbing. I am worried that he is going to get very ill.
DS gets alot of positive attention and praise. We are also very consistent with the boundaries that we set for him so l cannot understand why he is persistently exhibiting this behaviour whilst acknowleding that it is unpleasant. Not sure if this is worth mentioning but he is hyperactive at times.
