if you keep crying you won't get your present...

so we're in the middle of chanukah and my mom is visiting. My mom who I always thought was the GD role model.

My DD is 4 and very impatient. We were getting everything set up to do the candles then eat our chocolate gelt and have a present to open. DD started crying because it wasn't happening fast enough for her taste. So okay, not the most mature thing she could do, but she's 4! So she's crying and I'm saying things like "I know it's very hard to wait. We'll do the candles first, then the presents. Do you need a hug? Would you like to go play in your room until we're ready for presents?" etc

So my mom pipes up with "well if you don't stop crying you won't get your present". WTF? That's just MEAN if you ask me. Of course DD started crying harder and I had to reassure her that Gran was wrong and of course she would get her present.

My mom was like "what's wrong with saying that? she was throwing a fit!" Now, all of a sudden, I realize why I hide my emotions!!! Is this what she was saying to me when I was a child???!

argh.

just needed to vent

so starts the season of joy and giving. can't wait to see the inlaws at yule!

peace,
robyn

I wouldn't have been ok with that either.

I hate it when people say things like that to children. It's horrible. Way to go on the compassion, grandma.:

My MIL used threats once or twice on my kids - stuff like "if you don't give Grammy a hug, she'll leave tomorrow" (we don't extort hugs and she was going to leave the next day, anyway!). DH was really straight with her about why that was inappropriate and that it would NOT happen again. She's been better since. Don't back down with your mom, it's wrong to treat children that way.

Sounds like my mom and dad too. They pretty much either bribe or threaten my children every time they see them. When I'm standing right there, already handling the situation. It makes me bonkers.
