Does anyone know how to do this? I would really like to make some but my searches on Google are coming up with nothing!

Any advice?

What kind of embellishing do you want to do? You can add a fabric strip, embroider, dye etc...

Embellishing Prefolds

I was thinking of embellishing by putting fabric in the middle. I'm also interested in dying them but I think that's pretty straight forward.

Hmmm. I don't have a tutorial, but I can explain how I do it. It's pretty simple. I measure the center of my diaper, add 1/2 inch on each side and 1/2 inch on top and bottom and cut strip of fabric that size. I then either iron under the 1/2 in all the way around or just fold under and pin so there are no raw edges showing. Then I do an overedge stitch (you can use zig-zag too) all the way around the edge. Voila, embellished prefolds. I just finished 2 dozen premiums indian prefolds for DS.

Dyeing is easy - www.dharmatrading.com I used Procion (?) dyes.

I also managed to "paint" some of my pfs using the dyes. This was probably 3yrs. ago so I'll have to think about how I did it. I didn't perfect the technique but I have a couple of pretty ones. I'll see if I can post pics later.

I just did 12 today for burp cloth gifts. I will post pics this weekend.

Easy peasy. You can put a strip down the middle or a strip down on one end (from side to side). I prefer the look on the end but then when the diaper is on you just see it on one side. I add ribbon or rickrack. I first sew on the ribbon from end to end, and then when I sew on the fabric to the diaper I turn both the ribbon and fabric down and sew a straight stitch on top of that. Then the ribbon does not mess up.

I add approx. 1 inch to length and width. Then I turn and pin the sides and leave the ends open. I start sewing about one inch from one end, go down the side, and as I approach the ends I turn them under and sew them down. If I pin it all down sometimes the fabric shifts and it causes the diaper to roll. I pretty much eyeball everything and don't measure.

I just bought a dozen super soft PF diaper from Target in the automotive department. They are actually really nice, much nicer than the ones in the baby section. I think they were $7/6 diapers. They are not as thick as chinese PFs, but they are super soft and make excellent burp clothes. They would also be great for small babies you change often or could be doubled up. If you add a strip of flannel down the middle to decorate they would work in older kids.

I know this is an old thread, but I am planning to do the same thing. What type of fabric will work with a snappi?
A lot of people don't use the bottom hook to the snappi. But if you were going to use it, I would think you would need some terry or maybe velour. I don't know. Maybe someone who does know will pipe in.

Great tips. I have been wanting to do this with some of my prefolds.

I wanted to comment on this, though:

Once my son started moving around a lot, and especially since he's been walking, we have to hook all three points of the snappi. We had a nasty incident where the bottom hadn't been hooked and he walked/ran/climbed enough so that the front of the prefold wiggled down down down and the hooks of the snappy were pressing into his skin! In a dangerous place! Yikes!

We have had trouble getting snappies to 'snap' into heavy flannel fabric, FWIW.

To make them snappiable, I make a 1 1/2 in x 1 1/2 in square where the bottom snappy would go and sew around it. Here's a pic

should the prefolds be prepped first?

I've never embellished diaper, but I would say yes. If you sewed something on to a diaper then it shrunk in the wash it wouldn't look right.

Thanks for this thread. I'm so doing this.

On some of my Snappis, I've cut off the bottom of the T, and just used it as a straight elastic with hooks at the sides. Mostly because I can't get the bottom part to stay hooked anyway. It always comes undone and sticks into me when I carry my son.

I love the idea of these diapers, and I'm SO going to embellish some of ours! Too cute!
